6’3 ’21 Amare Haynie (A.L. Brown)

Each player on this list has noticeably expanded their game throughout the last year, but none quite like Haynie, who now looks like a can’t-miss prospect. He’s a perfect complement and running mate to Kheni Briggs, who he’ll continue sharing the backcourt with for the next two seasons. Haynie is long, tenacious, and scores the ball in a variety of ways. He’s equally valuable on both ends of the floor, given his aggressive, high-motor approach to the game. Haynie handles the ball, creates well for himself and others, and can be a primary option within an efficient offense. He’s excellent in the open floor and possesses the necessary athleticism to play above the rim when attacking the basket. Haynie has a smooth shooting stroke from the perimeter and understands how to apply pressure without forcing the action. There’s a lot to like about his two-way approach, and college coaches should get on board now—because he won’t remain offer-less for very long.

Well that sucks!!!

It's not at all unexpected though. The great thing is that we made the change during the season vs in the off season, enabling a new HC to make up the difference with more time.

Scenarios:

Burke as HC - Maybe we retain a recruit or two or all?

New HC not currently coaching - Could be recruiting now and refill the offer pool quickly.

New HC currently coaching - Maybe one or more of their current recruits come to UNCW with them?

For sure. A lot to shake out. Guess i was just hoping the current class would give things time to play out first.....

When asked if he would consider recommmitting to UNCW he said, "it depends on who the next coach is" i. Interesting comment and smart move on his part. By backing off now it isn't going to look like he left becasue he didn't like who came on board if he goes elsewhere. But, if he decides he wants to re commmit, it means he likes who we ended up with. A win/win for him.

Ga Southern and Byington have been high on him the whole time. He took an official visit there before signing with us. I'd be willing to bet he'd stay at UNCW if Byington is the hire.

Don't forget where Burke was an assistant for 5 years. This could be a way to put more pressure to make the interim HC permanent. I'm sure he's been in contact with the current players about Burke and the coaching situation, and the current players have expressed their support of Burke.

This years recruiting class should have little importance on Burke's interim status being that it's one former signee and I think Elliott is a PWO.

Regardless. As a player, he's surely been speaking to the current players and they may have told them they're transferring if he isn't retained. These guys can develop relationships now that didn't exist before the internet and social media. And he may have picked UNCW based on the guys that have said they would transfer and he wouldn't want to come to a complete rebuild with a coach and players he wouldn't know. Have to think about the reality on the ground.

I think you're overthinking it a bit. With a coaching change imminent it makes sense for him to open his recruitment up. These things happen all the time, even before social media.

May be. But this is the reality he was likely facing if Burke leaves.

Elliot would be a walkon at UNCW but it looks like he had at least 10 offers ?

Verbal Commits has him with 9 and he has/had an off from MTS.

You might be thinking of Melvin Edwards. Who just got out of NLOI. Marcus Elliot has no other offers on his verbal commits page.

I agree with you, but unfortunately it’s as good a source as we have for UNCW
