He does look like he could be from the same type of mold as Cacock.

Not even close to a Cacok mold.

From this clip, looks like he stands around too much. Several clips where his team gets a fast break and he doesn't even attempt to run down the court. Shot is taken and he just stands there instead of making a move for a possible rebound.
I know these things can be taught, but to compare him to Cacok, I just don't see it.

I don't see Cacok either. His boxing out needs work, thats for certain, but that's not all that uncommon for a high school senior. He's used to using his athletic ability to grab rebounds over people. He won't be able to do that once he gets to Wilmington. Also, he's not a back to the basket player like DC15. He likes to put the ball on the floor and get tot the rim... Draw fouls or score, sometimes both. Kind of reminds me of a taller Addison Spruill. I'm sure Coach Fleming is ready to get this dude in the weight room though. Kid looks like he can be a beast.

Yep definitely agree with you there! Especially remembering his shape as a freshman here.

You apparently don't remember Cacok's freshman year. He had a lot to learn. He also came in weighing like 186. This kid is already 235. He needs some work in the weight room to muscle up a little more. I noticed also how he didn't always get down court at times. But when he wants to, he is a beast. I also realize players don't always transition well from high school to college, but this kid has the tools and athleticism to be an interesting and promising get. He may not be another Cacok, but he could still be a very good player for us. Let's face it, we may never get another Cacok.

There is no way Dodd is 235. 200 at best.

I don't know. McGrath told me he was 235.

Ok. A little research here. 247sports has Dodd at 200. But Blue Edwards, his high school coach, says he's 240. The Edwards interview was more recent.

Wow, that's crazy to me. 6'7 240 is nearly the size of DC15, Dodd sure doesn't look like it to me. I'll take your word on it though

Don't take it as the gospel. You know weights and heights are manipulated.

RE: Recruit Updates
2019 Signee Jake Boggs had a nice showing with 21 points helping Carmel Christian win a big high school tournament down in Florida. I've been very high on Dodd, but we shouldn't sleep on this kid. Looks to have a nice stroke, add that with Gasden next year we could have two "sharpshooters" on the roster. Impressive length and athleticism too. Here's a video of his championship game performance below... (The announcer is great btw)

McGrath has been talking Boggs up more than he has Dodd. Boggs could be that long and effective wingman we've been needing.

I can definitely see why... For me, there's just way more videos and stuff being posted about Dodd, because he's "the guy" for his team. Boggs is on a loaded roster and gets overlooked/doesn't stand out as much. Very impressive stuff. I think Sims is coming along to be a "long and effective wingman" too. There is someone who reiterates our need to bring in guys like Flemmings and Bryce. First off, there's not gonna be many Bryce type guys that come through often. Let's be real, if he stays at UNCW all four years he ends up as being one of the best to ever play for the school. Flemmings is a more possible get on a frequent occasion. Dude went to a D2 school out of high school, and just developed later. Boggs and Sims fit that mold IMO.

Bryce was a good, but not great player. I actually liked Ingram more.

He likely would have set the school scoring record had he stayed. We was very good, and had a very good chance to be considered "great"

RE: Recruit Updates
C'mon man, Bryce was great! Ingram was great!! What a collection of offensive talent they were! They had electric games with great quickness and that makes the difference. You just don't get 3 guys like that at one time usually.

Still, this staff has gotten very good talents that can be solid to very good players. Estime is a good all around player that has continued to get better. Sims has a chance to be very good for UNCW. Both can really shoot the ball from 3 and have size. Toews is good and Ty was killing it before he got hurt.

Boggs sounds like a guy that can help right away. Hawks can put a lot of length and skill on the floor next year. Dodd will help right away too. If he brings that aggressive attitude also with his game, he will make a big difference. It would be cool if he can swat away a few too.

It takes great players to win and good coaching. It's far easier when you get the players though, far easier. That's the area that I've been pleased with for this staff. They're recruiting players that have a real shot to be factors. And, even Keatts missed on several guys but did get Ingram, Bryce and Devonte plus got lucky with Flemmings.

Dodd had 14 points and 5 blocks in the first game of the Pitt County Christmas Tournament in a 81-41 win against North Pitt. Sounded like he only played the first half due to the game being a blowout.

He only had 2 points in Green Central's 71-54 win over DH Conley on Wednesday. Sounded like he got in foul trouble early and his team road some other hot hands. Here's a quote from his coach.

“Our defensive pressure was one of the biggest keys tonight, but overall, I thought we shot the ball better and attacked the basket even though we didn’t get the offense out of Imajae that we are accustomed to,” Edwards said. “Everybody else stepped up and played well. You are going to have games like that.”

RE: Recruit Updates
This isn't a specific recruit update, but more so in how some recruits may have more value at the mid-major level than P6.

Let's look at Andrew Platek (soph, UNC) and Kai Toews (fresh, UNCW).

The reason I use these two is because they were teammates during the recruiting process and Platek's recruitment by UNC resulted in Toews' recruitment and success thus far at UNCW.

Platek - Sophomore guard at UNC and attracted P6 recruitment (obviously). Like local Wilmington talent in years past, he's been a bench player and seen limited court time. In 2017-2018, he averaged 7.5 minutes scoring an avg of 2 pts per game and .5 assists per game. So far this year, his playing time has decreased to 3.5 min per game, scoring 1.2 pts per game and .3 assists per game.

Toews - Freshman guard at UNCW and did not attract P6 recruitment but was able to take advantage of the coaching change at UNCW as Coach McGrath eyed him up as a coach/recruiter for UNC and recruited him to UNCW following his hiring as our HC. Toews is blistering the competition and making a national name for himself on a regrouping mid major, ranking in the top 3 nationally (as of 05 Jan) for assists per game. His averages so far are in 2018-2019 are as follows: 30 min per game, 7.9 assists, 7.6 pts, and 2.6 rebounds. He's also averaging 3.8 TOs per game (stat noted/added here for objectivity).

Understanding there's a natural draw for talented kids to be a part of a P6 team, but at what costs? Toews, and many others in the past, are and have proven that you can take your talent to a "smaller" school and enjoy more playing time, compete at the highest level and still make a national name for yourself. Devontae Cacok is another great example of this, obviously, as he already owns two national statistic titles and isn't far behind for a third.

Makes you wonder what kids like Andrew Platek or the Stilman White's of the past could have accomplished at the collegiate level had they not chosen to be in a position of riding the bench just to say they played at school with big time name recognition.

Unfortunately, CG, all that tells me is that kids have, and will increasingly continue to do so, use mid-majors as a “minor league” of sorts. Play for a year at a mid to prove your worth, then transfer to a P6 that has a need.

Yep... Imagine if Ryan Daly was still at Delaware this season. If the NCAA eliminates the rule where you have to sit out a year if you transfer within D1 it will become even more prevalent. .. Really speaks to Cacok's character that he stuck around through a coaching change. I'm sure he would've had his fair share of P6 suitors.
