Longshore Union threatens to crush US economy
Quote:The Pacific Maritime Association said it will halt loading and unloading at the ports, including busy operations at Long Beach and Los Angeles, on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
The management association said it was taking the action because it does not want to pay higher premium wages for weekend and holiday operations while it contends workers, represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, are conducting a work slowdown.
This kind of crap is exactly why Unions need to be busted. 20,000 workers represented by one Union could cause serious harm to the US economy.
Greedy Unions want to cripple US economy if demands not met

RE: Longshore Union threatens to crush US economy
There was a report on the radio that said their average union member makes $145K per year.
I spent 9+ years in college and I don't make that much.

There was a time when such confrontational tactics were necessary for workers. Why most unions haven't moved towards a partnership model with management is beyond me. They are destroying what little credibility have left.

The problem with the longshoremen is it is rooted in nepotism. Joe Six-pack can get all the specialized training he wants, but if he doesn't have serious connections, he isn't getting in... period. I have no problem with unions fighting for wages and better working conditions. I used to have issues with it, but seeing the middle class disappearing, I almost find myself rooting for them now. If these guys can get $145k without formal classroom education, good on them. My problem is there is not equal access to these jobs, which are few and far between. My other problem is it is forced association.

Back in the day.....1990, a good friend was a supervisor for a home builder in the Cincy area and was telling about a home
he was finishing up. He said it was a guy who was a manager a bad handling crew at the airport, union job. Dude was making more money than some of the Delta pilots.

Unions apply force to extort higher wages than they could get in a free and open market.

Yeah but your sit-on-your-ass profession can last you until WELL after 65. How long do you think most of them can work in that profession. Maybe it isn't "greed" but the necessity to have a "nest egg" when their backs go out and can no longer do manual labor. Of course, you think they should be paid Chinese wages so you can buy your cheap Chinese or name your third world country for a few cents less.

When they do, wages drop, benefits drop and workplace protections drop.

Always looking at the negative. People who do physical work probably live longer than a desk jockey. But then again, these longshoremen don't do physical work, they operate the machines that do it for them.

Great points. Loved the assumption that UConn SMU sits on his ass all day too.

Given that he spent 9 years in college, I seriously doubt his job is very physical.
