I suspect the BOT determined that they couldn't cross BBVA in this issue therefore the donations were accepted.

Anyway, I signed up to be a soccer dad for the 1st time this past weekend. My youngest will be playing community soccer. I may even try and figure out some of the rules.

Semi pro, but yes. There are seemingly 85 of those leagues in this country now.

Good luck to your kid. Soccer is a great sport and it really keeps you in shape. The rules are all pretty much common sense, except for offside.

The Silverbacks are not semi pro. They are in the NASL, which is the second tier of US soccer. No, the players don't make a lot of money, but it is still professional.

I would still call them semi pro. Semi professional by definition is not an amateur, but the sport is not a full time occupation because the level of pay is too low. I know NASL doesn't really disclose salaries, but it's a big drop off from mls in terms of fan bases. We are just arguing semantics here though. I have seen them and their reserve team, and both are high quality soccer.

The new stadium is going at the old motel property between the current West Campus Field and University Blvd.

[Image: BBVA-Compass-field-rendering-from-SE.jpg...1000%2C521]

The building at bottom/center of the picture is the current Marshall Conference Center... looks like it will be renovated to be part of the soccer facility (locker rooms/meeting rooms/offices?).

Thanks for that explanation. This should really provide a big boost for the progra. There was nothing wrong with the current field, there was just nothing there but bleachers and a field. This should be much nicer.

Not really. There is a pretty thick row of trees coming from 65S at the University exit. So, unless they remove the trees...

I would hope that would be part of the press box building. Definitely would be an upgrade over the port a potties a WCF.

I remember reading that during the presentation they said the current field was getting torn up too much due to intramural use and other non-soccer uses, so I would not be surprised if the current west campus fields are kept for those non-NCAA soccer purposes to keep the new stadium in decent shape.

My oldest son has gone from rec soccer to club soccer and this week is attempting to make his HS JV team. Anytime you see your kid develop such a strong passion for something, you become a fan too. We watch more soccer games together than we watch college or NFL football games.

By the way, it's nice to hear about UAB's soccer program from outside of UAB. When other parents tell you that UAB has one of the best soccer camps in the region, and you hear your son's teammates (the good ones) talk about possibly wanting to play for UAB in college...and they don't know you are a UAB fan, it is a good sign for the program.

Makes sense. I grew up playing soccer, so I understand your passion. I know how much you enjoy watching the players(and game) progress as they get older. UAB is definitely a premier program in the area. I guess in Memphis you probably get some talk of the big ten and schools like St. Louis, but in the region, UAB is probably as good as it gets. There aren't many other colleges that offer high quality d1 programs. UAB is a known name, especially in the western part of the southeast. Over the past decade, it has probably been our most consistent program. We recruit from all over, so who knows, maybe one of those guys will wind up on the team.

When I was in high school the big camp used to be at Vanderbilt. Had that not been there, I'm guessing we all would've went to UAB instead.

Anyone know what the seating capacity will be or a construction timeline for the soccer stadium?

Quote:UAB Men’s Soccer and Women’s Soccer will play home games at the facility, which will also host non-UAB soccer matches. The facility is anticipated to seat roughly 2,500.

Thanks. Appears that Fall 2015 is the estimated completion. That will require pretty rapid movement to meet that goal.

A view from the other side...looks like intermural fields

What other sports can be played on a soccer field? Rugby? LaCrosse? Women's field hockey?
