I hadn't heard about this story (other than I knew the Episcopal church was leaning toward pro-gay marriage and other more socially liberal stances)

Well apparently, the EC "big church"/religion tried to claim ownership of the property of the individual church.... and it didn't turn out so well

The Blaze

Quote:In the latest property war, a court ruled Tuesday that the Episcopal Church no longer has rights to the breakaway Diocese of South Carolina’s property, nor can the Episcopal Church use or control the diocese’s associated names or symbols.

Although I wonder what this will mean for the individual catholic churches that do tend to go more liberal?

You know the ones that would have female priests or pro-gay marriage?

If you check out the case, which you can get to by following the links, and scroll down to the end of it you can see the concrete reasoning.

There aren't any wide ranging implications to be drawn from it. It is pretty straight forward.

if the property is in the church's name how can the national church claim it? I know the name on the deed for our church is "Church of Our Savior" not "Episcopal Church" or "Episcopal Diocese of North Florida"

Having just glanced at it, it looks like they argued there was a constructive trust.

It wasn't much of an argument.

I'm glad the lunatic conspiracy theory was taken down.
