Interesting (and telling?) that Beaty did not keep Reagan at Kansas. Reagan has prior experience at Penn, but this has to be viewed as a step down from a Big XII program (even if it was Kansas).

I don't think Beaty wants the competition. He wants to run the show not someone who kind of followed in his footsteps.

While I was one who wanted to bring him back to South Main I think it turned out poorly for Rice. He needed a place to land after the KU implosion and a place to keep in the spotlight for another job the next season.

I, for one, have no regrets, and wish him the best of luck. I wish his second tenure at Rice were a miracle season, but it did no lasting harm, and if it helped his career goals, then good for him. In the long run, I am grateful for his contributions to Rice Football.

It delayed another year of us having to find an OC.

I wish him and the kids all the best. All of the change has to be hard on the kidos, trust me I know.

It did appear to me that he was more in control of the offense than Larry. Just my opinion.
I just wished we could have used his departure to go out and get a young gun OC. One that was going to open up the offense, become DB successor and help us attract more talent.

No regrets here. I think he did a good job for us, I really do. And I think he is a really good guy. I wish him and the kids all the best.

We are talking about Beaty right? A little confused because the thread is about Reagan but the last few posts seem to be about Beaty. If so, I agree with your statement. If it's about Reagan I will withhold any comment.

I was talking about Reagan. I would say the same for Beaty. I actually liked some things that each did with the offense. But then, I think there's a lot more to coordinating an offense than play calling, and most of the other stuff is far more important.

I was going to say something similar.... not sure about the 'more important' part... at least for Rice... but certainly very important...

play calling is certainly but one aspect of being an OC... which is why I sometimes take issue (though quietly) that having an OC hired away means they are good play callers...

What I mean is, Hatfield could have crowd-sourced his play calls and it wouldn't have made much difference most of the time. (yes, hyperbole, but you know what I mean)

I'd even have been very happy with a middle aged Dad/Coach with D1 playing experience who understands how to teach kids so that they understand the principles of the game, angles, routes, and the like.

I was talking about Beaty, but I'd offer that I'd say the same thing about Reagan.

My comment, that started this, was about Beaty. I know he needed a job at the time and had to do what he could but just felt that he saw it as a one year gig.

he also got a guaranteed contract for 3 yrs at $350k per (I think the numbers are correct). I thought John was a really good guy, and I was sorry to lose him to Kansas.

I might be interpreting tweets incorrectly, but it seems that Reagan was not greatly revered among the more recently graduated players (offensively). Conversely, it seems that Edmondson is highly regarded among the current players. Take this with all the skepticism you deem appropriate as I am not an insider (nor am I a voice box for anyone in the program).

I will say this: Reagan, more so than Beaty, established an offensive identity for Rice. At a program like Rice, continuity is crucial.
