Why do people take hostages?

They think they can get something out of it by making demands. If by taking hostages you get your own guys killed then you won't do it. If by taking hostages you get a ransom, allies released from jail or publicity then you will continue to do it.

We decided to invade a sovereign nation without a declaration of war. That was their first mistake. A declaration of war unfetters those fighting. It allows for Marshal Law and execution of anyone that resists us. We should have gone house to house and confiscated every weapon in Bagdad. Anyone caught resisting or with a weapon should have been executed on the spot. We again tried to fight a nice war. That schit does not work.

Killing people is sometimes the answer. It depends on who you are dealing with and what you have to negotiate. It also depends on what your strength is relative to theirs. The US could technically resort to violence far more than they do - but we're actually a relatively peaceful country considering what we could do. Other superpowers in the past have not been as diverse in their decision-making.

Wars are about killing people and taking territory.

If we are going to play in the sandbox, we need to get busy killing people and taking territory - and not worry about collateral considerations such as native population perception and nation-building. It really is that simple.

I would say killing people and breaking things rather than killing people and taking territory, since we really don't (or at least certainly shouldn't) have any territorial ambitions in the area. Otherwise, agree totally.

There are three people that I can think of that made more change for good in this world than any killer and they did it without violence.

Ghandi
MLK

Coincidently, all three were killed.
