RE: JMU
Senior Day should be promoted by every sport, every year.

If you want to see Senior Day done right in men's basketball, just watch what the Big Ten teams do this year...some do the festivities after the game... the players are given a microphone and speak to the crowd...a video of each player is shown...etc, etc, etc.

And ... yes ... this has been brought to the AD's attention.

It's funny. I was thinking about this very subject last night after I read that Lee was once again named player of the week after averaging over 30 points a game last week. I thought how unfair it would be if Lee ends up winning the award simply because he led the league in scoring.

The real dilemma for the voters is that they will be asked to vote for POY, but in their minds should they not be voting for MVP. POY and MVP are two different animals and MVP's almost always come from teams that are at the top of the league.

A number of years ago I believe that Adam Hess led the CAA in scoring and in my mind he was the best damn player in the league. He did not, however, come close to winning POY, and rightfully so, because he scored a ton of points for an average team at best who lacked any other real scorers. There is no doubt in my mind that Adam could have been the leading scorer for any team in our conference that year, including the best schools, and if he had indeed played for the best schools he would have been POY. The same can certainly be said about Damian Lee. The same rationale that applied in Adam's day should still apply now, and if that is the case, there is no doubt that POY should go to Marcus Thornton.

Tony has said on many occasions that Marcus could go for more than 30 points every night if that was what we needed from him. The POY can very well be the leading scorer in the league, but there is no rule that he has to be. Marcus is the MVP and the POY of our league. To give the award to anyone else will be wrong.

Lee is also only a junior which works against him when a senior is in contention

My Tribe bias obviously shows here, but I think Tarpey could very well be described as an MVP-type player, if we make a distinction between POY and MVP. Has anyone been more key to his team's success? He currently ranks 1st in rebounds, 1st in blocks, 2nd in steals, 2nd in steals/turnover ratio, 5th in assists, and is just outside the top 20 in scoring. Talk about stuffing the stat sheet!

Also, Marcus was preseason player of the year and has done nothing to diminish that.

Random thought. I know the center court scoreboard has a display screen but does not do video. Could you set up, say, a big projection screen behind the empty baseline for a pregame hype video? A few choice highlights before the players come out of the locker room would "get the people going." Or maybe there is some other workaround for showing video in Kaplan.

Is that totally crazy?

Not crazy at all. Many programs have this sort of thing and not just in the P5 schools. I went to the GW/Richmond game in DC last month and was impressed with the video introduction GW had right before the players ran on the floor. That is an old, somewhat worn out arena (although quaint). The introduction definitely seemed to get the fans/students more amped for the game and starting lineups.

Yes, it can be done. Will it be done is anyone's guess.

Advanced stats actually rate Tarpey as more valuable than Marcus at least in win shares. However there is no doubt in my mind that Marcus should be POY. He's easily the best player in the conference on maybe the best team in the conference. 10 years from now when people look back on this year they'll remember Marcus not Lee or Tarpey

Video screen options were discussed during a recent conference call. This is high on our list of recommendations and we are not seeing much movement there yet.

But, you never know...at the beginning of the season, a platform in the open area was out of the question. And gold uniforms? Not a chance. The momentum is building.

The whole attitude at the AD's office is much improved now then even 5 years ago. Maybe attitude is the wrong word, just seems to be a much more active and focused group of people. Of course the fact that the mens bball program and now the womens program are dramatically better could play into it.

Kind of hard to come up with marketing schemes when your signature programs are under performing and there isn't much buzz.

Part of the attitude change is due to focused interest by the BOV 05-mafia

This is good to hear. Thank you for the inside scoop. I hope we can make the most of the current momentum.

Spencer et al. have been working hard on the heels of the Gold Rush success. Look for a big promo campaign for Feb 14 game...and don't put your gold shirts away just yet.

We can celebrate another victory and the 34th anniversary of Mr. Ribe's and my first date--which was after whooping up on South Carolina at The Hall.

Man, 90 got the Dukies all spun up a few days ago and they're still sore. A decade of dishing it out but can't take it.

Going to have to refer to 90 as "Ralphie."

Bought five tickets last night for the Delaware game and was surprised by how many have already sold. Courtside mezzanine seats all but gone. With promotion we should surpass 5,000 again.
