Bobby Hurley Public Enemy #1
Second year Buffalo Head Men's Basketball Coach Bobby Hurley is quickly developing a reputation around the MAC of a cry baby and whiner. If you remember, him and Coach K got into a shouting match during last season's game at Toledo. Also, he was constantly on the court yelling and complaining at the officials throughout the game. After yesterday's last second loss at Ohio, he got upset with OU Coach Saul Phillips about Phillips going on the court giving a fist pump after the game winning dunk. Even fans on the Buffalo Message Boards are complaining about Hurley not able to keep his mouth shut during and after games resulting in their perception that officials are not giving the Bulls any calls.

I spoke to an assistant at a MAC school last season (not UT) and he told me Hurley was the most disliked coach in the conference, by far.

I was surprised Jans wasn't a little upset last night. Coach K was really pumping up the crowd. Hurley is probably gonna be a good coach but he won't have many friends in the fraternity.

I know two MAC officials and by far Hurley is the most disliked coach by the officials. As for Coach K, both officials had nothing but kind words for him...

This is not something that started yesterday with Hurley either. Even as the point guard on some of those great Duke teams when he was first gaining national prominence he offended most people (except Duke fans) that he came in contact with.

My experience has been that in general many Duke students (undergrads more so than grad students) tend to have an attitude that goes beyond well beyond just self confidence to an elitist arrogance of self worth; however, most are able to keep it sufficiently subdued such as not to be totally obnoxious. Unfortunately, Hurley has never shown any such self restraint.

During his playing days - he almost came to blows a few times with other players - but I think his will to survive kept him from actually getting into the fights.

One of the guys on the MAC message board is a UB & Syracuse fan, and he is complaining about officiating.

A Syracuse Fan complaining about officiating?!?!?

Maybe he is a basketball fan that does not follow football at all------that extra point call was completely unjustifiable and totally inexcusable---it was just blatant incompetency . That replay official should have been disqualified for life and never allowed to officiate another game in any capacity.

Syracuse basketball fans are insufferable.

What's wrong with that? The sport needs more of that not less.

Went back a ways for this thread, but the PAC-12 has fined Hurley $10,000 for going after the officials ("'chasing and confronting'" is the quote, according to the article) after a game against Oregon State.

Sure. Blame the refs for losing. Wonder how he feels about all of the good calls he got?

I agree Detroit.... it’s a zero sum game as far as calls go... win some lose some... I’m sure he’s intimidated some refs along the line

MAC officials never had the balls to fine him. Glad the pac12 league office has a set.

It'll be interesting to see how the conference responds to what Groce did last night.

I was wondering the same thing while reading this. I missed what lead up to it, but saw him come 3/4 the way across the court to berate the officials.

He was arguing a call with a ref, the ref went to administer the inbounds pass on the opposite sideline, Groce walked across the floor to continue arguing, Groce got tossed, then had to be restrained by his own players. I understand reaching a tipping point when arguing with refs, but I've never seen a coach do that BEFORE getting thrown out of the game.

I saw this thread and found it very interesting. From my perspective, when Buffalo played at EMU, Hurley was on the officials right from the get go, I mean he was complaining while the players were warming up. During the game, he argued every single foul called against UB that I believe intimidated the refs. I'm certain the MAC refs felt in awe of Hurley due to his Duke fame. Needless to say, his strategy worked because Buffalo got most of the questionable calls. Maybe Hurley will not be able to intimate PAC 12 refs.

Rob Murphy very rarely gets emotional during the game which he feels is a good strategy to have fouls evened out by the end of the game.
