Howard grew the stuff though at a smaller private school and brought in donor money.
Wheatley's got that Medical background everyone wants and brought in grant money.

I HATE the quote someone famous cover letter. Strikes against Howard and Wheatley but Gaber dropped the Walton name, without ever saying she actually has something to do with them, so it all evens out.

I HATE the "urban" designation, it's a killer and means what exactly regards UT? Kill it, don't use it (except to get money). It was a farm when it started, it's not "urban." It's... rural. :)

I'm leaning Howard, the endowment needs work and I like that he grew the place but a uni can't run off donor money, it needs grant money. I think Wheatley gets it.

STEM, STEAM, STEM-H, someone shoot me in the head, I'm tired of buzzwords.

Johnson saw Toledo as an urban university. That was his academic specialty. He saw Toledo as a "small" school and he said no to leaving the MAC. 03-banghead

I only met the man (Johnson) a couple times and I really liked him and he was very helpful. You have to use "urban" to get money but what exactly do they think it means as a different way of operating? If you shoot for a specialty, that's all you're going to hit.

I agree with you, UT needs to behave like a player school both athletically and academically if they ever want to be a player.

Howard was in charge of a Liberal Arts college and in MY opinion, UT started downhill when Johnson's predecessor started killing every liberal art, left and right. If you want to create those players that make the next best thing, even in tech, you need to promote the liberal arts. And even Engineers lead better lives if they occasionally sing and dance.

Hence my objection to this country's educational over emphasis of STEM.

Unless he's a total con-job, I like his background.

That said, he's young and I wouldn't expect him to come in running. A small school has a lot fewer political voices than a University the size of Toledo and sometimes from what I read in the paper, they don't always seem like friendly voices. They seem like a bunch way too close to retirement to care if the University is healthy after they are gone, like they're going to get theirs while the getting is good, then go.

Three posts in a row. What a post whore I am.

Anyone else look up that college? It's like Hillsdale, extremely conservative. Is it too big a jump?

RE: Presidential Search Finalists
The only candidate that sticks out among the finalists in my mind Howard. Credentials make me feel like I've been wasting my life and the fact that he made it to the rank of lieutenant colonel is also very impressive. That is an up or out situation (from what I've been told) and the competition is fierce. In the end it comes down to personality and fit for the University. He would have a fairly big obstacle in front of him being a conservative in a mostly democratic, blue collar city like Toledo. However, he may also be the right person to move diversity forward in the city itself, of which the University is a major employer and hopefully would soon be seen as THE focal point of pride in the city. Would like to see the medical school take a giant step forward and attract top students out of all universities. Being a leader is most important in this role - and I don't think it matters one bit if the next president has a medical background. I would say being a lieutenant colonel in the military certainly shows a propensity to be a leader of a lot of men/women. Along with that, having an athletic background with a DI team builds leadership characteristics. I have another bias in that I have not seen a very good female leader in my business career. Probably as much to do with the fact that there were just not that many in those positions - and the ones that made it to a leadership role were either very good specialists or were very strong politically within a large organization. others tried to hard to overcompensate for being the "rare" female leader. Times have changed, but my particular bias has not. I suffered for 2 years with a leader that seemed to check on a daily basis to determine which way the "political winds" were blowing in order to know what to do. Of course there were also a lot of awful white male leaders along the way too. That may be why I discounted the other two candidates since they were primarily assistants to the leader - albeit in larger universities. At the same time, Mary Sue Coleman did a very good job at UM, but she was also the president of Iowa when she showed up in Ann Arbor.

Reading through those curriculum vitae and cover letters I have to admit I had to lift my feet up off of the ground as to avoid stepping in it...

First Candidate

Has quite the affinity for crayfish, crabs, and barnacles... i.e.:

Hemolymph ecdysone and electrolytes during the molting cycle of crayfish: a comparison of natural molts with those induced by eyestalk removal or multiple limb autotomy.

Wow, I would not want to be the crayfish who endured an eyestalk removal.... sounds painful

So crayfish, crabs, and barnacles but no mention of Rockets or athletics...

My Vote: REJECTED!!!

Second Candidate

A really desperate stab:

In 2010 I joined the Chancellor and Athletics Director (the current chair of the Bowl Selection Committee) on a trip to the NCAA offices in Indianapolis to learn more about our relationship with the NCAA.

My Vote: Nice Try, REJECTED!!!

Third Candidate

Just as importantly, a unified UT will offer its constituencies the esprit de corps or dare I say “swagger” they so deserve.

Our athletic program had the highest percentage of wins of any college in Virginia a few years ago while our basketball team will be one of the few DIII programs to play on ESPNU this year.

The University of Toledo is as the mascot intimates a “Rocket”.

It would be an honor to discuss the role I might play in helping this fine school (Rocket) achieve even greater heights.

My Vote: Ding, Ding, Ding, WINNER!!!

Go Rockets!!!

That is all, carry on...

I couldn't agree more! Dr. Christopher B. Howard would make an excellent president, and I truly believe he can take the University of Toledo to even greater heights in the near future! All of his accomplishments are extremely impressive at every single level. His military, civilian, and educational backgrounds make him the ideal presidential candidate for our great university.

Based solely on the article, I'm leaning Howard too. A wide range of experience, leadership, and a value set that fit our community play in his favor. Anything can happen in the interviews so I'll keep an open mind. My two questions for the candidates: Do you think our medical school should try to focus on one or two areas of medicine for specialization and; how can we increase the research and utilization of the alternative energies campus?

Compared to Jacobs, in retrospect Kapoor looks like the liberal arts best friend...well, at least a lot less threatening to them than Jacobs...but then Jacobs was a very good friend to athletics so I guess he gets a pass for breaking up the College of A&S in order to reduce the influence of the liberal arts within the University in order to advance the STEM agenda.

P.S. Could be wrong but it is my understanding that Kapoor played a pivotal role in attracting the world renowned jazz musician Jon Hendricks to the UT faculty.

RE: Presidential Search Finalists
Howard- Impressive resume, but essentially no teaching or research experience. Has essentially spent all of his life living in the South or Southwest, except when he was going to college. Was a mid-level administrator at Oklahoma, but for the last five years has been a president at a tiny, private school in the South that offers no graduate programs or real research.

Garber- Top-level administrator at Arkansas, Auburn and Nebraska. All big football schools. Born in California, but has spent the last 12 years in the deep South. Impressive academic credentials. Has been a professor, department chair and a prolific researcher. PhD from Cornell in urban planning. Finalist for the U of Memphis presidency.

Wheatley - Has been a provost, dean and department chair. The only candidate with ties to Ohio (dean/professor at Wright State). Worked at West Virginia and U of Florida. Born in England. Her degrees are from mid-level universities, but is a major researcher in the field of physiology. Interviewed for the presidency of Missouri and Florida State.
