Georgia State program
Someone asked on the private board why we couldn't be like Georgia State. As far as I'm concerned, they are a flash-in the-pan. They'll be mid-pack, next season, and worse if their coach leaves. Their fan support, despite over 30,000 students is no better than ours. I checked the 2 most attractive games on their home schedule- Green Bay and Southern Mississippi. They averaged well under 2000 for those games and who knows if those numbers are accurate. They had trouble drawing 1000 for the no name teams on their schedule. They are just like us- they might strike gold once in awhile, like we did with Newell, but they are what they are- a city school, with a city who doesn't care.

I think you are right.

They are not a long term force in the sbc like wku.

That leaves a lot of schools with a chance.

Its right there for the taking for usa, a st, ull, and us.

Who is gping to make the move?

A st. Will. Ull who knows and usa the same but we should push our chips in and try to make a 4 year run at 20 wins and some post season.

With the right AD hire, you guys can move fast given the deplorable state of Sun Belt Basketball. However, I have this strange feeling that you'll hire Chase Conque as AD and make a huge mistake.

I have that feeling too, but it's not a strange feeling, it's the same feeling that I've had for years. I don't feel that we don't have an administration that wants and will demand a really good program for its fans. And if they hire Conque, that is proof to me. If they wanted a good program, they'd hire an AD with some athletic department experience, and tell him before he's hired that there has to be a coaching change in the men's program. In a non-football school, the men's program has to be the lead dog pulling the sled. As good as Foley's teams have been, it's got to be the men's program that leads the program.

If they hore the right guy we could clean house, get an ast from a bcs that could bring a couple with him amd do what ga st has down and roll the league with a few sbc type players and 2 good bcs level guards.

I have a strange feeling we won't. Unlike ASU, who has a sizeable number of folks in Jonesboro, who put the Red Wolves first, we have the 7 on this board and a handful more. The main job for our AD is fundraising and ticket sales. We need a people-person who knows the community and where the money is. We don't get that in place, we have nothing.

What was the background of the ASU AD? Do I recall that he had no experience as an AD prior to taking the ASU job? Seems to me he's done a pretty darn good job so far.04-cheers

Mohajir was an Assistant AD at Kansas and FAU who graduated from ASU, meaning he knew the school and area better than most.

Its not that I think that Conque isnt qualified because he's never been an AD, I just dont know if hiring a guy with little experience in Athletics to run a D1 athletic program is a smart thing.

I also think that while mjs is right that our programs are very different, its important to understand that if UALR is growing to grow its ticket sales, it needs to produce a team that is going to win the SBC and make the NCAA's on a fairly regular basis.

That means, you need an AD who knows not only how to fundraise, but you need an AD who knows how to run a mid major basketball program, and how to maximize the little resources he has to make that program successful.

Remember, ASU's growth started because our fan base actually forced our old AD to fire Steve Roberts, and forced him to hire Hugh Freeze. He had no intention of doing either originally.

Thank you for clearing up Moajir's background. I was mistakenly under the impression that he had no AD background, but being an assistant AD at Kansas and FAU, he did have some background.04-cheers

I think Mohajir was a great hire for you guys. Having someone who truly loves and cares about the school, city, and program is priceless. I had hoped Derek Fisher might come back and take the job. Off-hand can't think of another ex-UALR athlete who could fit the bill. It often bothers me that most athletic department employees really don't care about the school and program as much as us fans. It's a job, which they would leave if they get a better offer. I'm not leaving. I have a feeling Mohajir isn't either (or, at least, it would take an offer than no one could refuse for him to leave ASU). That's who you want as your school's AD.

Well Chaase definitely has a connection with UALR, having earned his Master's Degree there and heading up the Trojan Athletic Fund for several years. Plus he would probably want to stay in Little Rock permanently. That's why I believe he'll be the best choice. Will he be perfect? Will he never make a mistake? Nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes from time to time. But I think he's a people person who will make working in the athletic department pleasant for those who choose to work there. And hopefully will listen to fan's opinions, although he won't be able to agree with everyone, but will at least seriously consider making changes that are in both the fan's and university's best interest.

Chase moved to Conway when his dad took the UCA job in 2000. So he got there in time to go to college there. His dad left last year to coach at SFA. No idea how connected he feels to Little Rock. He's been in Central Arkansas for 15 years- about 2/3 of that in LR.

Arkstfan was talking on our board about how he did an interview with Terry and started teasing him about open AD jobs, and the response he got was "It's my school man"

We've gotten really lucky with administration hires the last few years. Chancellor isnt even from Arkansas, but has really come in and adapted to life here. System President is actually a Razorback Grad, but he's been one of our best system presidents in a long time. In his three years here he has worked behind the scenes to hire our last 3 football coaches, including Malzahn. He led the search that landed us Mohajir as an AD, we're about to open a medical school and extension campus in Mexico in the next couple years, and we've set records for donations each of the last three years.

Jonesboro has unique advantages to Little Rock obviously. We're a Texas High School Football type town where the community is entirely behind the school. (Trooper Taylor tells the story of the day he got into town after being hired, he went in to Wal Mart at 1am to get a tooth brush and tooth paste, and spent the next 45 minutes taking pictures and signing autographs with fans and employees.

You guys may never be able to model what we do because we're two very unique institutions, and UAF has way too much control, but if you simply had administrators who cared deeply about your school, and didnt see it as a paycheck, you'd see growth, and you'd see it very quickly.

By the way, it still bugs me that despite growing up in Little Rock and living there for the first 18 years of my life, and sending you guys numerous ACT scores, I never got a recruitment letter from UALR. Now that was 11 years ago, and its changed a lot since I've got family who go to school there now, but I found it alarming that you guys weren't practically loitering the Central Arkansas High Schools looking for students.

It was strange. UCA and ASU went me letters about every month. UAF sent a few in. Even Missouri sent me a few letters even though I only sent them scores on a whim. I got nothing from UALR at all, and I purposely remember sending you guys ACT scores several times because I felt I needed a local option, and I hated a visit to UCA I took.

Worked out fine...but it was still curious. When my sister headed off to school a few years later, I remember that I pressed a Trojan alum I knew and got the contact information for the head of the school's admissions office, and thats how she got a lot of her information. But she was a different case, she had a job in Little Rock that meant she needed to stay close. That meant you guys or UCA. UALR won out in the end.

Interesting concept. And we have folks coming to our games wearing pig tee shirts. Of course, it is also impossible to find UALR tee shirts anywhere but the campus bookstore.

Which equals the number of places in Little Rock where you can buy ASU gear.

Little Rock is a pig town. Its sad, but its how it is.
