If Liberty needs a big in-state rivalry to excite the local talent then they can get with ODU instead or VT/UVA. JMU and the CAA shunned us when we were trying to join. It would hurt us if more Virginia schools went FBS as there is not enough local talent to go around to all of us. Lucky for us we are branding as a national school because we want to the premier Christian university. I don't think fierce rivalries sells to high school kids. I think being the only show in town is much more effective.
Here's an example. NC, NCState, Duke are all within close proximity. Now I'm not comparing LU to those schools but using them as an example. They all thrive and succeed with talent instate and out of state in very close proximity to one another. Add in Wake and ECU and the instate talent pool shrinks even smaller. Certainly two more FBS school in VA, bringing the total to 5 would be similar.
I'm not sure why you feel such a strong objection towards JMU. They are peers like us wanting to go FBS. Is there really any more competition from ODU or App state or any other nearby FBS program than when JMU joins the fray? To single out JMU seems unwise. To me the benefits are so many more than the negatives. If you don't agree, let's just agree that we disagree. We've best this drum enough on our board, unless others want to chime in with their perspectives.
I'm not disagreeing to be argumentative and I value your opinion which is why I asked to further see your point of view. I'm sorry if I came off as abrasive.
UNC, NC State, and Duke have strong regional rivalries because they are all ACC powers (or at least were formerly) in basketball and they are all right next to each other (with Wake Forest). But you are making my point when you say WF, ECU, App State, and Charlotte are all left fighting for leftovers at the FBS level. Liberty's pile of leftovers gets smaller if more Virginia schools get to FBS. Luckily only Virginia and Virginia Tech are P5 members in the state.
If Liberty wants to hitch it's wagon to JMU and pair with them in FBS then they could do a lot worse than JMU. I'd prefer ODU to JMU but I'd rather neither. We can have a great rivalry with another school in other states. I would want to partner with another school (or schools) with P5 aspirations like UConn, Cincinnati, Central Florida, Memphis, and BYU. Try to have them agree to fight for us to get into a P5 conference with them and reciprocate the favor to them as well.
In fact to take it one step further, I'd partner with UCF for P5 inclusion to the Big 12 (after we reach FBS of course) and label our partnership as the partnership of graduates because UCF has the largest undergrad program in the country and LU has the one of the largest online graduates. I'd push our huge combined population base to the Big 12, who has a small footprint, (especially if you remove the state of Texas) and use us as the bridge to West Virginia. In the meantime, I'd get a scheduling agreement with WVU in as many sports as I could to get their backing for membership. The Big 12 gets into two important new states of Virginia and Florida which have great demographics anyway.
I know the above paragraph is a pipe dream at the moment which is why we need to get to FBS or we're just falling behind. But I'm preaching to the choir with that!
