Here is a quick look at the 49ers.

6’ 11” center Mike Thorne is the centerpiece (no pun intended). He is averaging 10.7 PPG and leads the team in rebounds with 7.6 RPG. Forward Willie Clayton is another horse on the boards with 7.4 RPG. These two will be a handful in the paint.

We will need Arledge and Ross to have strong nights on the inside, and I suspect we will need (and get) a really good night from Douglas.

Guards Braxton Ogbueze (13.1 PPG), Pierria Henry (10.7 PPG) and Torin Dorn (from off the bench and 11.2 PPG) can all put the ball in the hoop. Notably, Dorn is a freshman, so we will be putting up with him for a few years to come.

This is a high-scoring team, averaging 79.4 PPG, and they have already gone over 100 twice, though one of those 100+ performances was in their double OT win over Penn State. We will need a strong three-point shooting night from Freeman, Bacote or Mosely, if not all three.

This game will be a tough one to win, but it is winnable. How we do will certainly shed light on exactly how good this Monarchs team is.

Pretty good run down.

I'll also add these two items:

Mike Thorne has been playing pretty poorly lately. If you double him and force him to play further from the basket, he will force some long hookshots that are not likely to fall. He's deadly from within 5 feet, but push him out to 8-10 feet and he's not very effective. He and Clayton are both TERRIBLE from the FT line, so I'd just throw bodies at them if you can spare them and foul both of them as much as possible.

Keyshawn Woods, another freshman, has been every bit as good as Torin Dorn. Keyshawn Woods is 11th in the country in 3 point FG % at 55.3% (21 for 38). His adjusted FG % is 64.7%. He is averaging 9.5 ppg and he can score in a variety of ways, he's not just a 3 point shooter.

We probably have more talent than anyone else in the league honestly, we just play lazy/stupid and have long offensive lulls.

When we're clicking on offense though, we're tough to stop because we have talent inside and out.

Most offensive talent in the league. Henry is a POY candidate and Clayton is their most skilled post.

JJ pulled Denzell early in the 2nd half tonight in order to have Denzell rested for their front line.

The 49ers are leaky on the defensive end, play a fairly aggressive 2-3 zone which gives us trouble.

We will need to absorb their early push and stay in the game. Our style takes and mental and physical toll on everyone, granted that we keep ourselves in striking distance.

We'll probably start off in man, get embarrassed, and then switch to a 2-3 zone after we've given you an early lead.

RE: 49ers
I have always said any team with 4 scores (49ers) in double figures are a handful. We could probably be that team, but we use a lot of depth and that is a good thing. I don't think our front court will be intimidated by the height differential. Our backcourt must score.

RE: 49ers
Every time I've watched charlotte play this season they've been sloppy and undisciplined. And that's being kind.

Of course that means they'll probably show up focused and determined and stop our winning streak because that's just how basketball works sometimes.

But if we play tough and force them into making errors the way they have against Miami and others this season, we can definitely win this one on the road.

^agreed. The 2 games I've watched they looked like a loaded AAU team. I think I made that reference in the CUSA forum and some of their fans agreed with that. IF they can pull it together as a team for 40 minutes they can be danger.

I definitely agree with it. We look awesome when we play disciplined basketball, but we only do that in small spurts and usually when we're trying to dig ourselves out of a hole created by sloppy play.

That will play into our favor just like the fGSU game. We won't pile on points on you but it's like getting fundamentaled to death, if there were such a thing.

RE: 49ers
I expect Baker to start, but with Douglas getting meaningful time. Reading the Charlotte Observer article, it says the UNC-C lacks front court depth. I'd use Douglas, Ross, Bacote, Palmore and Biberaj to pound the paint by either slashing or passing in to get movement toward the basket. Thorne and Clayton will secure the post, but if you can get one or both into foul trouble early they'll have to be more hesitant, meaning Arledge, Ross and Freeman can get more of the looks they want. We will need to control their guards, but if we can play the ferocious man-to-man defense we usually do, I think they'll be forced into taking difficult shots. Whether they fall or not I dunno. If we can get into an offensive rythmn I see us winning this game.
