RE: Javonte Douglas
I don't disagree with you at all.

Our team is much better than most people are giving them credit for.

Our defense isn't quite as good as it was when we had lee hassell carter and cooper down low with baze's long arms at the top of our zone, but our offense is much improved from that team.

We have an incredible balance now that we haven't had in quite some time and we can win games in a variety of different ways.

Blaine's teams were at their best winning rock fights where we frustrated the opponent. This team can play smooth, fluid basketball with great passing and shooting but it can also slow it down and grind teams out if that's what it calls for.

I give jones total credit for pulling nearly all the right levers all season long to get us to where we are.

12 games into the season, it's not a fluke and the other shoe isn't going to drop. We are where we are because of how we've played thanks to talent and coaching that we have.

If Douglas can give us a pair of long arms and size on the wing, help shut down drives to the rim, give us a few extra fouls a game and give some players a rest, he will be a most welcome addition.

If he can give us what he gave us last night on a fairly consistent basis?? The sky is the limit for this team.

The football team just went 6-6, finished 106th according to Sagarin, all D1 programs, just ahead of JMU and we are all drunk on their accomplishments. It's a huge hype factory and every has bought in.

Now the basketball team is 11-1 and I've been hyping them with some resistance from all these insiders with this great perspective. One even cautioned me on twitter about RPI when ODU was number one in the nation, like I was misguided or something.

I'm at the point where I'm like, screw the perspective. We are 11-1 and I realize we could lose 8 games in a row but for now we are 11-1 and I'm enjoying the ride.

And I feel 99 percent of the fans feel the same wag about the team. We are really, really jacked but still cautiously optimistic going forward.

Oh yeah, Javonte Douglas was better than I could have expected and I was already high on him.

I have no problem with the hype. We are 11-1 and have already run through the hardest part of the schedule. We have shown we can beat top level teams when we play well and have shown the moxy to win some games against good teams when the shots aren't falling. We will likely slip a few more times and there may be a head scratcher in there, but I truly believe this team is one of the 25 best in the country.

Not to get too far off track but. I sure remember Ronnie V. Turn around jump shot from the corners, good as gold just about every time . If they had a 3 pointer then no telling how many points he may have averaged.

I will also add that this team hasn't even come close to peaking yet. Some players like Palmore and Arledge, as well as Douglas, are still finding their roles with the new additions. If this team ever comes out firing on all cylinders, it can be scary good.

Re: Javonte Douglas
I was hyped for this team (and Javonte Douglas) before the season began. I thought we had a NCAA tournament caliber roster before the season and predicted we would beat Richmond, VCU & GMU.

Douglas is a difference maker. He has game and can elevate a team already playing great to another level with the different dimension he brings.

I'm okay with a few throwing cold water on things because it stops me from becoming unbearable.

RE: Javonte Douglas
From wiki: The NCAA's Southern Conference became the first collegiate conference to use the three-point rule, adopting a 22-foot (6.7 m) line in 1986.

That's why I said, can you imagine how many points he would have had in his career? He made most of his points from the outside. Even more scary, think of someone like Pistol Pete, who averaged 44 freaking points during his career with no 3 point shot!

3 point line added in 1986 after Valentine. I was at the Syracuse game in 79,
Boeheim said Valentine was shooting from the bus - great line....and win

Even in passing, those are lofty comparisons. Even if you are simply saying he has some elements of their games, it's just way too early to know what we have.

I do like what I saw. But again, it was inferior competition. Sam Harris looked great against mt olive in a preseason exhibition and t-Mac ended up predicting he would be all-caa.

All I'm saying is give it a few games against better teams before we start making ANY comparisons or throwing all time odu greats out there.

You drop your season tickets, you don't even know who Ronnie Valentine is and never saw him play, but you are criticizing ...I saw enough in practice to know the talent is there, that's why i was so disappointed when he started the season suspended......JJs job is to find a way to get this talent integrated into the flow every game and not disrupt the rest of the rotation...

I know exactly who Ronnie valentine is. Sorry I wasn't old enough to see him play but my pops definitely told me all about him. I dropped my season tickets because I didn't support the hiring of Jeff jones and I definitely didn't support the way the hiring went down.

I couldn't be happier to have been wrong about jones being the right guy for the job. As I've stated before, I've seen more from him from a game management standpoint in 1 1/3 years than I saw in Blaine's previous 10.

I feared Jeff jones was Blaine 2.0. I'm glad that couldn't be less of the case.

No worries.
I think very, very few people thought we would be THIS good, this soon. Rather impressive what has taken place at ODU. I still somehow feel we are one interior big man shy of making real noise but I would not trade these coaches for anyone. It gets real interesting now with the team hitting the road soon. Charlotte game is huge for a number of reasons. Get that one and who knows, maybe we ... I'll shut up.

The article on Ronnie didn't mention one thing...while Ronnie V a good 21+ points a game the person he was guarding Avg 20+ points a game. I think the screenwriter for "Space Jam" must have used a Ronnie V-ism for Bill Murray's "defense I don't play defense!"

On one broadcast near the end of his career one broadcaster said "Ronnie Valentine is ODU's 50 point player! He'll get his 25 to 30 points but his opponent will get his 20 to 25!"

Alot of people were wrong, i told a friend that didn't like the hire to give it a chance, and that JJ would take out VCU in year 2. We got a Lexus for the price of a VW.

Ronnie wasn't the best teammate, multiple suspensions - sad but he's homeless living on the streets of Miami......and didn't want any help

I think Douglas will eventually take a good portion of Baker's minutes and Palmore eventually loses some minutes

Freeman
Bacote
Douglas
Ross
Arledge

With a second unit featuring Taylor (6th man), Baker, Mosley, Biberaj and Palmore is a very balanced and solid squad. Hell even Clark and Ebondo can provide something in limited minutes.

Wow, discussion about RV brings back memories, I was the Sports Editor of the M & C during his freshman season, he was amazing to watch, especially against Georgetown when we blew them out on their home gym during the old ECAC tourney. I last saw him when I was living in FL in the early 80's and he was playing on a CBA team. As for the Syracuse game (they won 67-64 in the ECAC final), I interviewed Boeheim after that game and he truly felt like he was the luckiest coach alive to have won that game, he felt they should have lost.
