PR mileage for Watts
These two apparently took all their numbers/info from that poorly-reported Joe Nocera column in the Times. Putting his lies in the nation's paper of record was Watts' best move to date, as the gift keeps giving.

So now Watts is a leader on the "cutting edge". He's willing to stem the tide of academic mediocrity, by taking his mighty sword to the evil athletic budget, regardless of the backlash.
