Back to the original thread, losing Hull and JT next year will hurt. Parks put up a heck of a performance in the bowl game and I have liked what I see from Mayden so far. So, some drop off but worthy candidates in the wings

We get Zach Wright back too, and he is a definite contributor. Also, guys like Aston Walter and Lance Wright will be ready to play.

Agree, we have some intriguing options to replace them, but Hull and Taylor both seemed to excel in our throw-it-up passing attack.

For the rest of the offense, we'll lose 3/5 of the OL in Gray, Simmonette, and Carlson. All of these guys played at a strong level for us and will be missed. No insight on who is next up.

True about Wright. Don't know much about the others, but good to know. Walter is listed as an RB though and with Dillard/Davis tearing it up do we expect to see him get PT?

Was nice to see DJ airing it out in the Hawaii bowl. Hoping to see more next year coupled with our ridiculous (in a good way) RB roster.

Aston is a WR, and Austin is a RB. Pete Godber is a beast and will easily step in for Nico Carlson. I wouldn't be surprised to see Reue move positions, to either LT or C. Guys like Kenneth Thompson, Brandon Dawkins, Sam Pierce, and Calvin Anderson will compete for time at the other positions.

I see. The Rice Website shows both as RB; position might have been typed incorrectly. Aston is listed at 5'8" which seems a little on the short side for a WR.

Well, at least they know who some posters are based on their forum name.

Do we all think Christian Covington is returning? That's a big plus if he does spurn the NFL for one more season.

Houston Chronicle today says he's about made his mind up to come back, subject to his evaluation by the NFL scouting service that will tell him what his likely draft position would be if he came out. Can't imagine him being a high draft choice since he missed so much playing time.
I'm real excited about him and Moutachef starting at the DT positions next year.

Covington and Mouchantaf back would be big for the D, which also loses several key pieces.

Patt and Klare graduate up front. It was nice to see Klare have a big final game in Hawaii. It's unfortunate Patt didn't get more opportunities earlier in his career, his athleticism causes problems.

Racliffe graduates at LB. We'll miss his energy, but have a number of LBs on the roster.

Our secondary just gets wiped out though. Baker, Finner, J. White, Callahan, and Hill all graduate. Blasingame made some plays in Hawaii, and there are young guys like D. White and Banks, but if we had issues this season with more capable passing attacks, next year looks worrisome.

Cella will be back, as well, and I think many underestimate his importance to the offense (assuming Edmondson will learn to use his TE as a receiver and weapon).

He'll also not be ready for the combines. Given all that, I can't imagine he'd be drafted earlier than the 5th or 6th round this year. A DL with Covington, Moustachef and Nordstrom will be dominating, to say the least. That alone, coupled with our solid returning LB corp, should more than offset the inexperience in the secondary...and many of those inexperienced guys were far more highly regarded in high school than the guys who have played there the past couple season (save for Gaines).

RE: Football 2015 season
Well the interesting thing to me is to see what DB's 2nd generation of recruiting yields in terms of talent. The seniors graduating this year and last year were the 1st generation of DB recruits, mostly after the 2008 Texas Bowl win. We had some great talent graduate and move on to the NFL(Too many to name and we all know who they are). That story, along with the 3 straight bowls is now part of the Rice recruiting pitch and recruits who have decided to come to Rice based on the last 3 years are now the new underclassmen. Optimistically, I'm hoping that the talent in this 2nd generation of recruits will be even greater than the guys who just graduated since the program is now on more solid footing than 4 years ago.

Either way I am very optimistic about the 2015 season and we should at the very minimum be able to repeat an 8-5 season with a bowl game. Above .500 and bowl games should be the norm now.

Current ratings of MWC (through 11 bowl games):

8. Boise State (11-2)
28. Colorado State (10-3)
32. Air Force (10-3)
34. Utah State (10-4)
57. Nevada (7-6)
64. San Diego State (7-6)
81. Fresno State (6-8)
88. New Mexico (4-8)
90. Wyoming (4-8)
97. Hawai'i (4-9)
105. San Jose State (3-9)
115. U.N.L.V. (2-11)

Here's a slight tangent. This is Driphus' full season stats including the bowl:
Stat CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT
Season 191 331 2842 57.7 8.59 88 24 8 27 148.9

A pretty solid year, though the sack number seems a bit high. His rushing stats:

ATT YDS AVG LNG TD
121 401 3.3 43 1

I think he had a pretty good year and I'm very excited to see what he can do next year, but where do you guys think his 2014 performance ranks in terms of recent QBs, say in the last ~10 years? Chase Clement probably has the best 2 seasons in the last 10 years, but how does this year compare to the rest?

I don't believe that it is fair to compare this season to those of other quarterbacks, in that he was playing hurt for so long. I did see more aggressiveness in his rushing attempts in Hawai'i - perhaps because he knew he was done for the season after this game, and didn't need to hold back as much?

Pollard was playing well at the end of the year too (outside of the La Tech game perhaps). He's back I believe in 2015.

Extra rest time without a game probably helped, too.
