Finebaum made his bones at the Post-Herald with that story. If I remember correctly, Johnson announce that he was going to UAB and his mama smacked him on the back of the head and said "Oh no you're not, I'm not giving my refrigerator back!"
Bobby Lee Hurt, Ennis Whatley, and Buck Johnson were what got Gene so mad that he wrote to David Berst in the NCAA enforcement office.
Actually the Fine bomb story was the athletic coke machine money at his High school was used $ 500 to buy Bobbie Lee a old car. FB said thus he was no longer an amateur and would be ineligible at UAT
Buck Mama received the very very Personnel attention of a Wimp Assistant - not a car. (even on a lower moral ground). She would only sign papers for UAT. Buck left home. He ended up staying at some of his smoker friends/UAB players apartment. Mama showed up with the police at the cloudee apartment and almost beat the hell of an assistant coach that was with the guys. UAB then dropped recruiting Buck just like UAT had to on Alan Ogg. The old days were really wild
