He basically parroted the same talking points he used in the meeting with the UGSA. At that meeting he blamed the media. In this one, he threw Mackin under the bus too. A lot of responsibility dodging. No one strongly sparred with him but it also seems no one is buying what he's selling. In fact, he probably pissed some folks off, too. Watts was also reminded that this decision clearly violated one of the requirements of president that was explained to all the candidates.

Make sure Mackin is hearing about this. Maybe we can anger him into spilling to the media . . .

Don't wanna get into specifics but basically said he (Mackin) didn't do his job to get info out re: the study/announcement so he had to step in and do it.

But I thought it was the media's fault for getting the story out too soon? It's amazing how he contradicts himself every time he talks. No wonder the PR people told him to sit there and do nothing at graduation!

Basically, sounds like he is saying that Mackin chickened out and quit. Otherwise, it would have been Mackin facing down an angry room of large football players and he could remain "above the fray". He had to do it after Mackin quit.

From what I've heard, you might not be far off.

One more thing. He said, UAB had the lowest attendance in CUSA for FB and that factored into his decision. But he used student attendance, not overall (5th in conference).

"In reaching my decision to shut down UAB football, I'm including as a reason that students, who can go to a game for free (or at least reduced admission) don't attend games, while many other fans that pay full priced tickets do. Messina seems to be relaxed in the fact that he's said his piece and folks are seeing right through Watts.

Hearing encouraging news about some other actions to tighten the vise on Watts. But I'm not privy to those chats.

I wonder if we could find out how many UA football games Watts has attended, and of those games, was he a current student at UA.

Who cares? I don't.

Bust his chops over his actions and how he conducted himself. It's enough.
