Numbers are even more compelling than I thought. Using the NCAA statistics SMU's Opponents have shot more 3 point shots against SMU than any "major program" in the Country. Actually 5th out of 345 but the ones above them are in small conferences
1. Presbyterian 714
2. Liberty 676
3. Monmouth 675
4. Tennessee St. 673
5. SMU 672

In other news, Memphis' half court offense is just very poorly constructed... I don't even think the team was running it all that badly. It's just a poor offensive system.
The play this year has been nowhere near as physical as we used to see in the Big East. The UConn-Pitt games were especially brutal, and no one complained.
We had a variety of styles in the league (physical teams like Pitt, and more athletic teams like Syracuse). By the time we got to the NCAA tourney, we'd seen it all. And that helped us.

God you are ignorant. Neither Tulsa nor Memphis are jump shooting teams. Memphis has two of the better post men in the conference and Tulsa relies on driving the ball via its guards or using our smaller but more athletic forwards to outpace the opposing bigs.
I'm not angry that they were letting SMU get away with physicality in these games. I'm just angry that they weren't letting the opposing teams do the same. IMHO the only games I've seen where both teams wer allowed to be physical are the ones SMU lost due to aggressive guys like Octavius Ellis of Cincy.
Also things like delay of game violations (or at least a warning) need to be called. SMU was purposefully trying to get the ball away from our baseline so we couldn't get the ball in after they scored because they know we like to inbound the ball quickly and it would have hurt them. It's a smart tactic if the refs let you get away with it.
A Larry Brown SMU coached defense made you a jump shooting team.

RE: ***Official Memphis vs SMU Game Thread***
We were taken out of our gameplan vs SMU no doubt. I guess points in paint isn't a long term tracked stat so I got bored after calculating the last three games. Tulsa and SMU are nearly identical on % of points in the paint compared total shots taken. Jump shots is more the just threes to me, and it needs to be considered in context since the rest of the league flat out takes more shots across the board, not just from three.
Now how much were we taken out of our game due to defense vs no calls? That's part of the issue here. Tulsa isn't scared of physical play that is allowed to go both ways. Temple was a rugby match this week.
I notice Memphis had more points in the paint despite fewer total points as well as a a lower percentage of attempts from three vs total attempts last night (right under 27% of total attempt for Memphis vs right under 29% for SMU). Props to them for staying with their plan of attack.

All losing teams complain about refs more than winning teams. Funny how when you belly ache about refs apparently you don't realize you just look like a a loser. Tulsa needs to get a grip though - i have never seen such whining about refs. Its not a winning attitude.

We didn't lose that game because of the refs. Just stupid. We lost this game in February when we didn't have any guards signed to make up for the loss of the 4 Kingz. Their guards are good. Ours are mediocre when not fouling out with 17 minutes left. Simple as that.

Markel Crawford was shutting Nic Moore down throughout the first half before he got destroyed by that screen. Hey what can you do though

This x1000. The BEAST games were much more physical than any games I have seen in this conference. Whining about the referees is freaking lame, sack up, or go home.

Yep Tulsa is close on Opponents 3 point attempts but Tulsa has also played one less game-so probably the difference is about 17-20. Actually, I know where you got your stats-I saw it too-but that was outdated. AAC has updated stats and SMU's opponents have taken 365 3 point shots and Tulsa opponents have taken 313. To put that in perspective, SMU's AAC opponents have taken more 3s against SMU than Houston has shot-and anyone watching UH jack up 3s all nites knows that is astounding

I'm not complaining at all about refs, and I prefer physical play. We got beat, nothing else to say.
