Why wouldn't this work? A new northeast conference
With realignment chatter picking up, especially if one believes the Cincy insiders, assuming Cincy and one other AAC school leaves, why wouldn't this idea work? It seems to make a considerable amount of geographic sense:
UConn, UMass, Buffalo, New Hampshire, Delaware, ODU, Marshall, FordhamFordham.
There's no I nonsense of having to artificially get to 12. These schools are historic rivals, attract pretty much the same kind of student body, are aligned academically, and have a good mix of basketball and football prowess. They also have comparable athletic department revenues.
The only "dowdownside" is instead of a tacit recognition that the divide between the Power 5 and the G5 is really no different than saying that the gap is really between the P5 and the rest of college football.
Something like this would take bold leadership, but as revenue woes continue to mount, this proposed confesrence offers a very tenable and stable grouping of schools.

Marshall wouldn't be interested as they prefer a more southern based conference because of recruiting and this conference offers them no upside over CUSA at all. I would imagine ODU feels the same way.
UNH and Fordham are nowhere close to being ready to move up to FBS

The CAA would have to get an OK to go fbs. UConn, Buffalo, Marshall, and ODU would want no part of it. Albany, Stony Brook, Towson, JMU, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, and Kennesaw St would bite.

Substitute Temple for Marshall and you might have something. If UConn's interested, everyone else would sign up. It's just a matter of choosing who to add after UConn, UMass, Buffalo, and Temple join.
Not sure if UConn would be interested, but it would keep their travel costs way down.

A couple of points.
First, if those who follow college athletic don't see that there is a growing gulf between the major conferences and all the rest, I don't know what to say?
Football is obvious. Basketball will become increasingly so. Look at conference RPI. Top conferences are all the majors except for the Big East. The major conferences will beg gunning for the NCAA tourney money.
Second, there are winners and losers in this. If your school is in a major conference, you won. If not, then you lost. If you lose you don't give up, but adapt to the new environment. When the exit fee monies dry up in less than 4 years, and there are just a few NCAA units to cash in, how are some of these schools going to survive? They can't at the major college level. Regional games, limiting travel expenses have to be part of any plan. They just have to.
I really think the UConn insider is on the right btrack. He definitely knows the revenue/expense side, TV contracts and the deepest thinking in the university. I have been heavily swayed by his arguments. To me, the just make too much sense.

I realize the Big East is a non-football conference so maybe you don't pay attention to the sport, but are you really that clueless about football?

How is this in any way related to what I posted? I didn't say anything about a gulf between winners and losers, or any UConn insiders.
