UNCW eliminating men's/women's track and field, men's cross country & adding women's sand volleyball.

While it sucks for the student athletes & coaches involved, I am a big fan of this move. Will save a lot of money in the long run by eliminating the arguably least attended sports sponsored. Hopefully these savings can be parlayed into long-term success for the athletic department as a whole.

No, never good - but I can see and understand. I think most everyone thought that after the reprieve for some sports last year that the axe still hung over some sports.

Ironically, men's track and field & cross country are the two sports UAB will be adding. Sucks for the affected athletes and I hope it leads to more financial stability for your athletics.

The better way to do this would be a future date and not next year but it appears that UNCW is now broke and has to take the low road.Tell the freshmen you are the last class and don't pretend like you have money when you are broke.I get the fact that something had to go but what a crappy way to do it.

Based on the goals set for the AD of focusing on programs that have the potential to compete at a national level, this was the smart move to make. We may be winning CAA championships, but we had no chance ever of competing at that level.

This should have been done when the committee made the suggestions, but as was typical Gary screwed it up. Passing the buck to a later date.

i thought we already had volleyball, is this sand volleyball an addition to what we already have ?

From what I understand its like beach volleyball.

i think it will be two to a team.

Apparently there were 27 D-I Sand Volleyball programs in the country as of 2013. Average team size was 14 but there are only 3 max scholarships per team, which can be split up to as many as 8 players: http://www.scholarshipstats.com/sandvolleyball.html

Guess the Administration felt that, with so few teams, we could compete at a high enough level to justify adding the sport. Hell, we're already a top 30 program right now! Haha.

Apparently, there are now over 40 schools that sponsor sand volleyball with a potential for an NCAA Championship in 2016!

Detweiler's article in the Star from yesterday stated that the changes will save UNCW $761,193 over the next 3 years & that current volleyball coach Bambenek will also be in charge of the sand team. She'll get a full-time assistant to help with both teams as well as an extra scholarship. They will likely start play in the spring of 2016 off campus.

How much is UNCW paying out in men's basketball salary now for coaches?I know they borrowed money to pay Peterson but that has to count.

That's a personal problem on your end. Sand volleyball is big in this area. It's played here pretty much year round. Just another perk for the beach life.

Ok. Well UNCW added Sand Volleyball to it's list of programs, and we'll likely be successful at it at little cost to the school. I fail to see the issue here.

The issue is Jeffey is freezing his butt off in Maine and us slightly jealous as he should be.
