... in private school presidential compensation, according to a survey released Sunday by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Dr. Leebron's base pay of $795,395 was not in the Top 20 of that category, but bonuses, nontaxable benefits and nearly $600K of "other pay" brought him up to $1,522,502, #1 in his peer group, which includes the presidents of U. Chicago, Washington U., Vanderbilt, Princeton, Carnegie-Mellon, Notre Dame, Cornell, Dartmouth, Williams & Brown.

Well I'm not sure we're getting performance equal to that pay since all of those schools passed us in the rankings mostly under his watch.

Rice is also #7 among "all colleges" in Kiplinger's new Best College Values. #4 among private universities.

Hahaha.

I do wonder what Leebron could/would/should have done to avoid this from happening. I feel BCM was a golden opportunity that we should have made happen but otherwise - thoughts?

I agree. In my mind, it's almost akin to Rice having the opportunity to join the Big 10 yet getting cold feet because the entry fee was going to be expensive.

(I know that Baylor University allegedly scuttled the Rice-BCM deal, but it was my understanding that a fair number of Rice faculty were vocally opposed to the deal as well for financial/organizational reasons.)

I don't recall seeing BU in the mix ... I thought it was purely a financial decision on Rice's part.

I45, I actually don't remember much discussion about Baylor University at the time, but in subsequent discussions on this discussion board, people mentioned that BU held a veto on any merger involving BCM. Like you, I had previously been under the impression that Rice--despite Leebron's wishes and efforts--decided to not go through on the deal, seeing it as a "bet the endowment" proposition.

While I fully acknowledge that I don't have all the pertinent information, based on what I do know, it was a decision I would have had voted for (from Rice's perspective) any day of the week . . .

RE: Rice is #7 ...
My understanding was that Baylor University (BU) had the ability to veto any transaction involving Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and was threatening to do so, and that on top of everything else was one thing too many. Apparently, BU's ability to do this had not been disclosed or had been overlooked or something during the initial due diligence. Had the financial risk been less, then there would presumably have been negotiations with BU to find a way to get the BCM deal done. But the combination of financial exposure plus BU made the deal unattractive and Rice backed out.

Ok. I don't recall seeing that before. I had hoped for a long time that Rice would acquire BCM, and am disappointed that its financials made that impossible, but I still have to think that was the determining factor.
