And then they came for me
Martin Niemoller was a prominent Protestant minister and an out spoken critic of Germany during WWII.
Let me preface my remark by saying his famous quote about what happens when you see injustice and remain silent is the reason for this thread, but not meant as a comparison to the evils of WWII with Watts destroying UAB Athletics.
You all remember the quote, that starts with "First they came for the Socialist and I said nothing"
Well this is for our Blazers and members of Blazertalk.
First they came for the Football team and I said nothing, for I wasn't a football player.
Then they came for the Bowling team again I said nothing because I didn't bowl.
Then they came for the rifle team I said nothing because I didn't shoot guns.
Then they came for the Basketball team and I said nothing because, I didn't play basketball and was protesting the taking of__________
Then they came for me and my__________ there was no one left to speak for me and my________.
I write this because I went to the Illinois State Basketball game and was asked where are the students and I had no answer, only excuses.
That led me to think about the many articles written both negative and positive about UAB Football since the decision to cancel football.
If a tree ( basketball ) falls in the forest ( arena ) and no one ( fans ) is there to witness it, does it make a sound is it heard.
Well if its being broadcast on Television, reported by local, national news outlets and spread through social medias, it matters not if it made a sound, its a matter of if you want to believe your eyes or ears.
The Martin Niemoller quote came to mind while reading negative articles written from Montgomery to Tuscaloosa and some al.com posts about why UAB didn't support or need a football team, how the decision made by Watts was the correct decision.
There are so many things being said by so many people about UAB football, its supporters, fans, students and more.. Remember words are very powerful, so use them with that in mind.
Some powerful words are being said right here on Blazertalk some positive and some negative, like decisions to protest by boycotting the other sport teams. And my very own decision to not give a single penny until Watts is gone.
Whether we agree or not on our paths to justice, our athletics teams should not be used as pawns.
Blazers lets not go down that road, DONATION or GIVING is one way to protest, but boycotting our teams to protest, in my opinion is bad and the wrong message to send.
If we boycott our teams WILL THE BALLS MAKE A SOUND WHEN THEY FALL, AND WHO WILL BE THERE TO SPEAK, WHEN THEY COME FOR THEM...
