UAB Faculty Senate Meeting - Tuesday at 7:30am (Come and Be Seen)
There is a lot riding on the participation of the faculty in this fight so UAB fans, students, alumni, employees, whatever...should be in attendance of this meeting if possible.

They have moved locations in order to accommodate the larger crowd. It starts at 7:30am on Tuesday morning and will be at the 1st floor auditorium in Cudworth Bldg, 1919 University Blvd.

Here is a link to the Facebook event where you can commit to going or just see more details (you don't have to be a member of Facebook to see it):

Tim Alexander just posted something about Watts calling an emergency faculty senate meeting foe tomorrow at 1pm. Anyone else heard this?

Just saw that. IF it is substantiated, we need to ask the Senate at the Tuesday meeting what was said.

Surely smart professors can see through his lies if he's having to call a special meeting to save face.

One more chance to spread lies. We need somebody with tenure & close to retirement to show up and tell Watts where he is wrong.

And watts may be trying to save face, but i bet he threatens more than faces.

Someone should question him on the timeline issues that Kevin Scarbinski exposed. It's always a good idea to get a liar to continue to weave his web of deception that way people can see his true character for themselves in person.

Perhaps one of the faculty members could ask him how he can get away with using a flimsy 16 page (with cover sheet, table of contents, etc.) report to inflict tens of millions of dollars of damage on the Birmingham area while they are requiring more detailed reports and analysis for basic undergraduate level research papers?

Looks like he's trying to intercept some momentum weighing heavily against him. Can he actually prevent the Faculty Senate from convening?

No. He can probably "convince" them not to vote on anything tomorrow though.

He may even try a "let's wait until you see my final plan with how I will reallocate those funds, get UAB in a new conference etc before you proceed with a vote."

I suspect he will try to rehash the points from the FAQ on the website. And then encourage patience and for people to wait and see.

Hopefully folks don't fall for this...

Would a vote of no confidence even matter? He's not going to quit and they won't fire him

The board would be forced to remove him. You can't lead people who have said they have no confidence in you.

It's the faculty saying, "You can't be our president any more". If that happens, the BoT can't save him.

Hell, why would they? He did what they hired him to do. They can cut him loose at any point.

Do we need 51% to vote no confidence? What's the voting threshold?

Googling around it looks like there are lots of cases where a vote like this doesn't result in firings. Here's one from a few days ago.

http://www.nola.com/education/index.ssf/...s_vot.html

I think our case may be different. When the faculty has lost respect and the students piss on your likeness how can the BOT look the other way?

I would imagine that if the USGA, GSA, & Faculty Senate all vote no confidence and the BOT still keeps Watts, SACS will have a lot of questions about that when they come in January.

Yes. That's why this much effort has been placed here.

Be there Tuesday morning.

In academia, a "no confidence" vote is very serious thing, and it would result in changes. For example, at St. Joe's in Philadelphia, the president recently survived (for the time being) a "no confidence" vote, but many of his top advisors were forced out. The UAB situation is rather different, but Watts' authority would be profoundly compromised. It would be a great first step in winning this fight.
