I could not be more proud of the students last night. I had a great time and jumped in among them. It was an honor to help Timothy Alexander lead some cheers. This is one pissed off bunch of students. While the rest of the crowd was not huge many wore black and was vocal. The crowd sounded like 8,000 at times.

Kudos to Reed and the rest of the staff. ;-)

The loudest student crowd I have seen for a bBall game by far. Louder than Memphis and UNC. When I was walking in at tip it sounded like a sold out crowd.

I was really quite shocked at the number of students. In an effort to kill the undergraduate student body they've actually emboldened and cemented it more than any other event has in UAB history.

So I have a question:

I know that the students weren't there for the basketball team entirely, but the environment definitely helped us in the game. Has anybody talked to Haase about sending a letter to the students to let them know how much that meant to him and the team? I know that doesn't seem like it should be necessary but I feel like we want to encourage that type of behavior as much as possible.

I'm sure some people are protesting UAB Athletics in general right now, which explains the rest of the arena, but I feel like there is no reason our student section shouldn't be filled like this every game, especially the Thursday nighters.

He posted on twitter about how he was proud of the student section and how it made the difference

Awesome. I'm a huge fan of his, i was just hoping he'd do something to acknowledge their presence, because last night was embarrassing without them.

RE: Blackout at Bartow Arena to Protest, 6:00PM Morehead vs UAB Thursday Night!!!
That was the most bizarre game atmosphere I've ever witnessed. If we had 3000 fans as the box score suggested, then 2500 were in the student section. I hope administrators saw this as a student only protest. How did the news report it? I hope it didn't get reported as "UAB supporters stage protest at basketball game. Look at all the empty seats."

My favorite point in the game was when the students had a loud "Fire Ray Watts" chant going as we were about to start the second half. Before Tyler Madison inbounded the ball, he turned towards the students and pumped his arms a few times, motioning for them to get louder. I don't know if he realized what they were chanting, but I like to think that he did.

Agreed that this really doesn't do much, but it shows the students care.

They were trying to be respectful of the basketball players who were caught in the crowd.

I think it is known in the media that the students were the ones directing the event.

I watched the 10 o'clock news and it might as well not have happened. Standard game report, period, dot.

ABC 33/40 was just a standard report on the sports segment. I missed the first 10 minutes of the News so unless it was mentioned/showed at the beginning of the broadcast, I agree with Band Dad.
