Well your prognostication may be the better one.
It's hard to know who will emerge as the heir apparent, but Jones does have the athletic credentials.
2015
Stehling JR
German SO
Jones RS FR
Granato FR
I have no inside info, maybe WR is where he ends up. But I think our best chance to excel again on offense is to find a QB with that type of unique athleticism.

Yeah,
Donelly - Stanford and Ole Miss
Herndon - Oklahoma and now SMU

German would be a candidate. However, he is another that I would rather see at WR (or even DB) rather than languishing on the sidelines holding a clipboard.

Some of the tweets mentioning Herndon decommitting from Rice included a #Hookem hashtag, that I assume means he's also getting heavy interest from UT if he doesn't already have an offer. Kind of crazy that Rice's first 2 commits have now decommitted. Even crazier that I have helped hijack a thread about a football player joining the basketball team into a thread on football recruiting!

Herndon's twitter seems mostly to be sandwich boarding himself. Retweeting everyone saying such and such big school (e.g. Texas, ATM) should offer him, himself tweeting things like "To pass on me would be a mistake"

Several UT sites are saying that he'll be offered imminently.

RE: Jeremy Jones joining the basketball team
I hate seeing Rice losing highly regarded commits to other schools. But if they don't want to be at Rice, then its better for them and Rice if that decision is made now. How hard does he want to work in class, how much does he want his post-football degree to be worth, how much does he value playing under the spotlight, and how does he balance the possibility of early playing time with the concern that he might get buried on the bench? Lots of tough issues any recruit has to sort through.

Yes, my memory fails. Apparently comes with the grey hair. IMHO, we will always struggle to keep recruits against top ranked P5 programs like Texas, Oklahoma, and now Stanford and Ole Miss. You can get a top notch education at any of these schools if you work at it. And, the difference in facilities and exposure is incrementally different. I can't fault any kid who heads that direction. Baylor and TCU have struggled with this for years and are just now getting over the hump, but they both still make more of what they bring in than they do in getting the 5 star recruits.
If Herndon ends up at SMU, it will give us an idea of what Chad Morris will do to us in the future on the recruiting trail. I expect he will be a very formidable foe in that capacity.

Somewhat back on topic-does anybody know anything about Denzel Davis' status? I don't think he was on the bench during the HBU game.

Correct. He was not on the bench Wed. night vs. HBU. No one I talked with knew why.

I flipped thru his twitter too.....this kid is his own biggest fan, he's very high on himself. He'll go to UT or Oklahoma and then on into obscurity. Next?

Jeremy Jones joining the basketball team
(12-05-2014 02:01 AM)mrbig Wrote: Herndon is a fool if he decommitted because he thinks Rice doesn't use the TEs enough. Cella basically missed the whole season. Roby and Hunt had opportunities early in the year and really struggled catching the ball consistently. Rice very recently produced 3 NFL TEs, just hard to believe that is the reason. If nothing else, it would provide an opportunity for early playing time.
I think Robby struggled but Hunt did okay. I don't think they were so bad that you drop them from your offense scheme and go with Lineman as TE.
The 3 TE in the NFL are there because of being great athletes and because coach Sloan is good at developing them. It surely has nothing to do with stats given we hardly throw to them.
