RE: UAB close to dropping football?
The plus would be playing in Florida every year and possibly getting a new pipeline of recruits starting in that area.

I cant see Toledo drawing any noticeable change in crowds for anyone except Marshall. Maybe UTEP or Rice because of the names but otherwise the rest. Who wants to see FIU.

We'd have to increase our athletic budget considerably just for travel. Wonder how many southern schools would want to come to Toledo for a November football game?

I really don't think fans come out to see any specific visiting MAC team, except BG. I would be for a change to the CUSA. I think the MAC has a negative stigma attached to it from the national media and I don't see it changing.

People don't go to MAC games because it is MAC teams playing them. There is "junior" football stigma attached to the MAC. Only a couple, including Toledo, have actual year in, year out fan bases. No matter how the team is doing on the field or on the court. Example, as bad as the Cross years were, Toledo still drew 3,000-4,000 fans to Savage, and still outdrawing most of the other MAC schools.

I see no reason Toledo couldn't have a following similar to Cincinnati or Louisville, if we left the MAC.

CUSA, nah, I don't think so. Most of that conf. is a just a southern version of the MAC, IMO.
Imagine the trips to such exotic locales like Hattiesburg Miss. Denton Texas, or Ruston LA. I would not waste my frequent flyer miles to go there for road trips, with the exception of the Florida schools. Then for kicks we can poke fun at FIU and their EMU - like attendance... Reality check, - empty stadiums is not only an MAC issue...
Look, I would not mind an upgrade out of the MAC down the road, but Toledo probably needs to start stringing together some football championships and an occasional NCAA appearance. {Not once every 30 years} to be a candidate for a more prestigious league...
UT had an outside chance back in the 90's to be a part of the old Metro conference {Pitt, Cincy, Louisville, Memphis} but the powers that be, nixed the idea...03-banghead

Actually their subsidy of around $20 million per year is right in line with many MAC schools including EMU, NIU and others that are heavily subsidized. UT is the least subsidized school in the MAC by far! This could spell trouble for schools that have financial/debt issues on top of their subsidy as time goes by.

Funny, I see three. Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame.

RE: UAB close to dropping football?
This sad event is just the beginning of the expected fallout from the college football "arms race", started by schools like Ohio State, Alabama and their brethren. They know they can outspend the smaller schools, cheapening what they accomplish, despite not being able to totally outperform them.

All in the name of money and prestige.

RE: UAB close to dropping football?
The AAC will live on though and probably be the smallest guy at the P6 table. So might the MAC but it is likely the MAC will downgrade to FCS or DII by the end of it all. If Toledo just got in with the big guys we could hold on for dear life. The move isnt neccesary yet but eventually it could be.

If I were the UAB president, I wouldn't want the rifle team mad at me.

If they're half as upset as the football team is. He'd be in a lot of danger.........

While I feel bad for the young men if I hit the lottery the only teams I would bankroll are at the University of Toledo Rockets!!!
