Message sent to me by prospective student
This message was sent to me moments ago by a prospective student. Hmmm. Could enrollment be affected?

"Hey, I've been hearing a lot about how UAB doesn't really care about their undergrads and they only really care about their med school. Is that something I should be concerned with? I've been looking at USA because they also have a med school and it seems to be a good school also. Thanks"

You bet your sweet bippy that enrollment will be affected by the pending slaughter of our football team, present and future...All work and no play, well, you get the idea...Wouldn't be surprised if the word "transfer" is on the minds of several attending UAB pending the outcome of this death warrant.

Yes, enrollment could conceivably be affected by that stated perception. The effect would be the same as we see in where (and in which fields) the "best and brightest" choose to study for their future employment. They go where their opportunities to prep for the "good life" they desire will be maximized. UAB could thereby become like the poorer school districts of Alabama in getting the best of those who have the least / fewest choices. Getting "the best of the rest" is not a good way to build a nationally respected university (or school system).

BUT YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT.

Really feel bad for the Admissions staff right now. This has to suck.

Out of State has been growing for us in recent years, not sure if that will take a major hit. In State definitely will seeing as it went down from the 13 class compared to this 14 class

out of state enrollment, in its classic form, would definitely be affected. but if its true that the vision is to turn UAB's undergrad arm into the university of phoenix, part 2…it doesn't matter

The need to import quality students is something the media have not yet picked up on. Both UA and UAB have increased their out-of-state enrollment to over 50% of the last two freshman classes (at least). We are seeing the same thing happen in our five D1 FB programs as they averaged 4 or 5 instate public high school recruits last February NSD (I recall UAB signed 4). We can check to see if that trend continues in Feb. 2015.

Who did sign the bulk of Alabama's high school players? Schools like Jax State and Miles College signed more than any three of the state's D1 schools. Perhaps the same state funding problem is affecting academics as is affecting athletics. Our schools may be getting the bulk of leftovers from both.

They need to voice their concerns and join the fight if they haven't already.

They're like the masses. Don't say anything and hopefully it'll just hit football.

It affects their job TREMENDOUSLY. They have to deal with those questions while on the road and be mindful of what they say. Their job is to recruit and council students and they don't get paid much to do it. They can't say much of anything anyway, because they could lose their job. And before anyone goes ragging on them realize a large majority of our admissions office is under 25 and trying to build something for themselves.

Not everyone employed at UAB can just "speak out" the way we want them to, they have to think about themselves too. Sucks to say, but it's the truth. We need to stop pointing at them as if they're the problem and just turn up the heat.
