In fairness, Ray Alborn tried what would have been a school record 54 yarder on 4th and 6 from a kicker playing in his first college game who had never kicked a college field goal before. Kick hit the upright but kicker was roughed, 15 yard penalty and first down. 3 plays and 2 sacks later, they scored a school record (at the time) 55 yard fg.... or so I've heard

Good thing they got sacked on the opposite hash so the same kick went thru the second time.

Or so I imagine.

I was probably there, just can’t remember ‘em all any more (!)

lol

obviously a shameless plug.... The only point I was making was that sometimes kickers are at the mercy of opportunity. I have little doubt that Chris Boswell was capable of kicking the ball farther than the guy who's record he tied... and both had of course made even longer ones in practice... but his only opportunity was that one. SOme others probably could have as well, but never got the chance.

One would suspect that unless it's a hail-mary situation, that a coach would generally only let a guy try something that he'd seen him at least come close to in practice with some regularity.

I seem to remember that this guy was some walk-on who won a kicking competition for the job earlier in the week, although perhaps my memory fails me in that regard.

Context matters. Back in 2014 when I posted that (and there was a possibility of Bailiff leaving on a mediocre note), the future of the program was at stake. Now, I’m not so sure.

Wellll, looks like he's good for now (you never know, though):

Amid down year, Muschamp looks forward to ‘a long tenure here at South Carolina’

Our boy is shuffling the deckchairs like a pro...looks like the problem was a lot more than Roper...

Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp shuffles football staff

Quote:The moves were aimed at eliminating the two most troublesome areas of the Gamecocks’ program the past two years — its inept offense and a lengthy injury list.

Offensive coordinator and play-caller Bryan McClendon was demoted, and Muschamp has already begun the search for a new one, his sixth such search in eight years as a head coach.

“You know, no one was bitching last year when we averaged 425 yards and we averaged over 30 points a game. We’ve struggled this year. There’s a lot of different areas that are at fault and need to get fixed, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

McClendon was elevated to interim coordinator and play-caller after taking over for the fired Kurt Roper at the end of Muschamp’s second season. The Gamecocks won the Outback Bowl with an electrifying fourth-quarter comeback as McClendon called the shots, prompting Muschamp to drop the interim tag soon after.

Muschamp knows how to build a defense but is a disaster on the other side of the ball. It’s really amazing that he can be a good DC with so little understanding of how offenses work. Somebody needs to pay him a couple of million to be a DC.
