More from USA Today's Dan Wolken
About the Blazers appearance on the misery index:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nca.../18763461/

"This is about bigger picture stuff and the constant worry for UAB fans that the anvil will drop on their football program, which has a history of being underfunded, unsupported and generally mistreated by the University of Alabama system Board of Trustees."

Wow pretty concise summary. 25 years of frustration in one paragraph

This is why I get frustrated when I hear things like, "the football program is hemorrhaging money." I would like to know just how much it cost to finance UAB Football.

A former student of mine who now works for ESPN (in a high-level capacity) is digging into this. Expect national exposure this week.

Awesome! We need the national media/press to look into the situation because we know state/local won't due to Crimson bias or fear of the bottom of Smith Lake.

One problem we may have is getting the perception across to many outside this region that a university BOT could POSSIBLY behave in such a petty way over a football team.

In most of the nation, such a priority being placed on a sport so that a state university that struggles to spend $13,000 annually (having to increase tuition by almost 50%) for the general student could turn around and have an Athletic Department annually spending $200,000 per athlete since 2008. I've lived here and seen the published figures and still have a hard time with it.

I think actually they understand better outside the state than in some places within the state.
