That's not what I am reading here.

Trust me, many of us predate the origins of football. If kids go out and compete with UAB on their jersey we support them and want to give them the best chance to succeed at the highest level possible. That's really what all this is about. The reality is now football drives the bus in athletics and that's just a fact of life. Competing at D1 with no football, in the south, puts UAB at an immediate disadvantage. It also puts us at a HUGE disadvantage when it comes to recruiting the non athletes. Kids want to have that fall football experience at part of campus life.

I'm so tired of the "football drives the bus" cliches. Football doesn't drive the bus at UAB. We want football to drive to bus here but it doesn't because of the BOT and some other factors. And again, there are plenty of programs that don't have football programs that does just fine thank you very much.

It's time we separate the football aspect from the basketball aspect. Fact is we don't know what the state of UAB Basketball will be without football. All we're doing is speculating. What we do know is that the BOT is keeping UAB Football from being the driving influence you and others want it to be on campus and in Brmingham.

I am basketball first when it comes to UAB; always have been and always will be. If UAB Basketball ends up in the SWAC it will still have my support because of Gene Bartow. I do not want to see the football program go away and I will do everything in my power to have save it. Students, graduates, us deserve to have it.

But UAB Basketball is going to move on regardless end of story.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. My hope is that we keep pouring on the pressure this week and we never have to find out.

Drop it man. I was a UAB Basketball fan first and UAB Football fan second. I just don't believe in supporting an athletic department that doesn't control its own destiny.

Gene Bartow's vision included football and if they pull the rug out from under us right when we get to the doorstep...it will no longer be the athletic department Gene Bartow created.

What would Gene do? Would he cave to the people who are trying to damage our programs, or would he do everything he could to defend UAB Athletics?

Basketball is more important to me. But before some of you start talking doom and gloom about UAB Basketball, lets just focus on saving football. When we get word that UAB Athletics is going away, then for me that is when the chit will hit the fan.

I respect that many of you are passionate about the football program; I care about it too. I share that same passion for our basketball program. No need to get into which one is more important than the other. We just need to get out there and support UAB Athletics period.

RE: A-10? Makes no difference.
I'm passionate about UAB Athletics. I passionately oppose those who are trying to gut our program. We've had season tickets to both for years. I go back to Ogg, Kramer, Kennedy, that era. I wasn't here at the start like some, but I have time in.

We're just trying to make the people who are primarily basketball fans and don't care all that much understand what the implications of losing football are. There are a lot of people who aren't involved in the fight yet because football isn't that important to them. If football is shut down, they'll find out what the stakes were, but it will be too late to change things.

There are a lot of influential people in the Frozen 100 who really aren't engaged because it isn't their ox being gored... but it is, they just don't recognize the threat. That's why we're beating the drum, not because football is more important.

The threat to withhold donations is an attempt to emphasize just how serious people are about this, not to hurt hoops or any other sport.

If football goes, we won't have to hurt it, the damage will already be done.

Point I think the administration needs to hear loud and clear is that if they can the football program, there are a lot of us that will abandon the program and the school entirely. I love basketball as a sport way more than any other, but if they actually do this I will honor Coach by turning my back on the whole school. Coach dreamed big not little.

If football is killed, whatever backwater conference basketball will be banished to won't make a hill of beans difference by anything anyone here does.

Sure, UAB will still put 5 guys on the floor, but it won't be what Coach Bartow envisioned.

The math lesson is that if football ends, so do 85 male scholarships which could mean the end of that many female scholarships no longer needed due to Title IX. How many women's sports are being sustained by the need to match those 85 scholarships?

When Synch swimming was ended, UAB started bowling and beach volleyball because they were needed to balance those 85. What happens to those and the others if those (male) 85 go away?

Will UAB also lose the Golden Girls, cheerleaders and Blazerettes? Or some fraction of them?

The public universities will support you, especially VCU. UMass will be supportive, especially since we'll eventually will be leaving the A10 as a FBS Football Only is a dying dinosaur. Guessing URI and St. Louis and probably Dayton will not vote against you. Don't know about Davidson, GW, Richmond and the Dukes. The other small schools may need some persuading.

It's also important to remember far more people come to football games even in the bad years than come to basketball.
