UAH Hockey and Bammer
So what was the deal there? I was looking at the petition and somebody said that Bammer tried to kill that program too. wtf?

They haven't won more than 2 or 3 games a year since then. The program is still there but basically dead.

Conveniently about the time Alabama started getting serious with a club hockey team, too.

Part of UAH's issue lately was being an independent team and the struggles occurred before the shutdown attempt. They just now joined back in with a conference (last season) and it will take a second to build back up to being a quality conference team.

Separately, hockey as a sport has taken a major hit in popularity in the U.S.

UAH benefitted from the local political base across the entire metro area, not just Huntsville or the immediate district where UAH is located, banding together and raising a huge stink about it. Birmingham is way less cohesive as a political force than Huntsville or Mobile (which is why UAH and USA are able to keep or add thing like hockey and football)

Why is that?

Well, I don't really feel like going into the political history of Birmingham in a forum post but it's a suburbs vs. city thing that goes back to the civil rights stuff of the 60s.
