It might be hard pressed to duplicate that number this year since I think football and golf last year were surprises, but we should be favored in baseball, swimming and women's tennis again later this year. And I think volleyball has a chance too.

5 conference championships last year: baseball, women's tennis, swimming, golf, football

We will have a chance in women's outdoor track and field.

It was nasty. I don't want to try to post video, but the defender was tracking back with Hughes, who whiffed on the ball. The GK dove forward to block the shot and her neck snapped up on the contact (basically, it seemed like a 90 degree angle).

The substitute GK was moved back from forward (the announcers said she had nearly scored the equalizer a few minutes prior). It occurs to me that soccer may be somewhat unique in this regard where you wind up making decisions between moving an attacker to defender. That's something to keep in mind when you see the GK move into position to receive a corner kick on the offensive side. When GKs play as position players, it seems to me that they're often forwards due to the athleticism required of GKs. I can recall another piece of coaching advice I read somewhere... you take the problem child that doesn't listen to instructions and thinks rules don't apply to them - that's your GK.

And, congrats to the team!

From what I saw of this game, they pretty much bossed the entire game. That was my takeaway from reading the game stats of other games, but it was pretty clear being able to see them on TV.

It was utter domination. For NT to be ranked higher is weird - it's almost as if they were missing all their best players because Rice controlled the ball on the ground and in the air the whole way. This was the first Rice soccer game I've ever seen and I was very impressed. Way to go, ladies!

Congrats to the Owls.

Added bonus, we didn't do anything ridiculous on national TV, like UConn after they won the AAC on penalty kicks:

Interesting Florida State tidbit: they hold the record for most times in the NCAA women's tournament without a national championship. Sound familiar?

I like the draw. It's a winnable game. Common opponents were Baylor, we lose 1-0 in OT. First game of season. Texas beat Baylor 2-1 and Arkansas in which both games were 0-0.

Rice beat TCU in an exhibition game, 3-2. UT lost, 3-1.

Rice is 1-2 all-time vs UT. Last meeting was in 2006.

If #4 seed Notre Dame wins its first-round game, our winner would have to play in Indiana? If so, I hope the supercold polar air now moving into the area has moved out by the 21st.

I believe (I may be wrong) that the "second round" games are not necessarily at home sites. There is a strong possibility that a Rice-Notre Dame match-up could be played at College Station on Friday November 21st.
