Another Week, Another Disappointment
I thought we played pretty well against Duke, all-in-all.
I don't expect any improvements on defense with the current staff. I think we need a shake up there, starting with House. I would hope the administration will allow for a top shelf coordinator hire.
The offense looked terrific to me. I was pleased with how they were able to match Duke time and time again. I liked the variety in the play calling, mixing in designed runs for Voytik. That adds another element that defenses need to be aware of when playing us and should open up more opportunities in the passing and traditional running games.
I figured that at the end of the game, the second run to the right side of the field was called because that was where Blewitt wanted to kick from. When Chryst was asked about it after the game he seemed to say that he just wanted to get a few extra yards for Blewitt. I'm not really happy with that explanation unless Blewitt just doesn't care where he kicks from, or Chryst knew he preferred that hash. Little details like this matter a lot in football and it can be the difference between a win or a loss. I'm not saying that was the case yesterday, but you have to set yourself up to be successful all the time - not forget about it when the pressure's on.
The game really came down to the missed FG. It's unfortunate because Blewitt has been so solid all year. You have to wonder if his confidence is going to be shaken from this the next time he has a chance to hit a game winner. I don't like to blame kids but at the end of the day, this missed kick is what lost us the game. The coaches did enough to keep us in it.
