^And yet the FCS has been doing it for........how many years? I guess FBS players can't hack it.

Georgia Southern would have deserved a playoff spot had they taken care of business against Georgia Tech and NC State.
Man, you guys are GREAT. This whole playoff thing won't be fun unless there is at least 6-8 teams involved.

No matter who they select, there will be around 10 schools who would have legit claims to the tourney, and just as possible of winning 2 more games as the 4 schools selected.
They may as well put 10 schools in a hat and pick 4. It is meaningless.
This playoff will be without merit until they at least have 12-16 schools involved.
I have been doing the Mother playoff plan for several years after the season is over. That one is 24 schools and is completely doable. It also keeps the bowl system intact. Search my thread history if you want to check it out.
CNation - No matter who they select, there will be around 10 schools who would have legit claims to the tourney,
The same happened with picking just 2 teams for the NC game.
They need an 8 team playoff system which I think they will end up with. I think the P-5 will end up with the winners of each conference and the top 3 teams in the standings.

Every conference that meets the FBS criteria should get an auto-bid. Every other sport (including all other levels of football works that way.
So that is 10 champs. NCAA rules require at least as many at-larges as auto-bids. That is 10 more.
20 team playoff, bottom eight play first round to get to 16.
The only issue with these large team play off systems with football is that this is a much more physical sport than basketball. That potential extra 4 to 6 weeks of games is asking a lot of those student athletes who have more to worry about than just football. They have class time to make up as well as potential missed finals and extra injuries. I would love more opportunities for the G5 to get recognition on this stage, but not at the expense of the student athletes.
Max 14 teams. 10 conference champs, 4 at large
14? Why not 16? Four rounds, no byes.

A spot in the playoff? For two decent ACC victories, Navy, Savannah State amd eight wins in Sun Belt, of those eight victories, it's likely five finish with losing records and possible as few as just one finishes above .500? Seriously?
They'd be in the access bowl discussio, but one of the playoff spots?

Thanks Tampa UCF Knight, but I agree MTP. RGSU just doesn't have the strength of schedule. I would have loved to play UCFs friends at USF this year.

The CFB Playoff is beyond stupid....
ESPN owns a significant number of the minor bowls. They would love to turn the New Mexico Bowl or the Birmingham Bowl into a playoff game.

???????????????????????????
Ok.... and where do you see that rule written?
How do they have a rule regulating FBS football playoff numbers when they just started it?
FCS did just fine at 16 teams for a long time.

Sports is a great thing if you let it be sports. The Cinderella, the underdog, are a key part of what makes a sport great.
This whole sport is rigged to maintain the status quo and only allow a select few to even have the opportunity.
The generic fan roots for a 15-seed to knock off Duke. But in football the generic fan has come to see a Boise or NIU as an interloper. Not healthy for the sport as a whole.

Yes. That is a NCAA rule for ALL playoffs. Basketball FCS football, every sport.
That is why the the FCS playoffs have been expanded. Every time another auto bid is added another at large is added

16+ teams. All conference Champs, the rest at large. If it goes past 16 teams, top teams get week 1 byes.

11 game regular season and no conf champ game. Granted now there is a 12 game regular season but that's recent. Still 15-16 games MAX. With a 12 game schedule plus conf champ game, you're at 13 games before the tournament even starts.

Me either, I'd like to see some sort of link to that if it is true.
Besides, what about autonomy? We can just vote the rule in without everybody else's approval right?
If not and such rule would stand.
Fine.
8 Auto bids.
5 P5's plus the 3 highest ranked G5 Champions. The rest are at large.
I could live with that.
