Macalester college - wow that's a heavy hitter. 04-cheers

Very well regarded Liberal Arts college. If he is saying it, I bet there are hundreds of college presidents that agree with him.
The bigger point here is that all of the other college presidents have to agree with him. Otherwise accreditation means nothing and that means that every online degree program is no worse and no better than what they have to offer at a much much higher cost. The future of on campus higher education everywhere is impacted if accreditation loses its efficacy.

North Carolina's position with regards to lack of institutional control is sports' penalties to the 10,000th degree more serious. If accreditation standards are not upheld all campus sites will suffer in the long run. If fraud is not punished the government institutions that regulate such lose all credibility. This is going to be taken extremely seriously by those agencies and boards. The NCAA is the least of their concerns at this point.

What is slowly going to sink in is that the Carolina Ram is going to become the Judas goat for the sins of everyone so that the status quo might be maintained and so that other guilty institutions have some cover under which to change their ways before they too are excoriated.

Are these violations serious enough for the death penalty in several sports? Would they even do that to a school like UNC regardless of the severity?

We aren't even talking about the death penalty here. What we are talking about is criminal prosecution for fraud and the loss of accreditation. That's why I said whatever sanctions the NCAA handed out would be the least of their concerns and would pale in comparison.

I've seen emails where folks were taking these paper classes in order to have enough credits to get Pell Grant funds. Now, if that's the case, isn't that a federal crime? Wonder if the Feds will get involved?

I think you are correct. Something tells me that UNC-Chapel Hill has a lot in common with the University of Phoenix and the other shadow schools out there.

Quote:The bigger problem lies with how the NCAA is structured and how UNC lets students in the front door whose SAT scores are far below college levels. A large number of athletes in the revenue generating sports are not prepared to take on the rigors of college work when they arrive on campus. With no remedial or extra classes to help them catch up, the only solution seems to be keeping them eligible via fraud.

Quote:The conspiracy goes all the way back to the time of famed coach Dean Smith, under whom 54 men's basketball players were enrolled in fake courses. Former UNC basketball Head Coach Matt Doherty told investigators that when he took over, Smith told him that he shouldn't change any academic support system staff—leaving little doubt that the coaches were in on the scam.

One professor was rail roaded out of the school because she had proof many of the athletes could not read at a 4th grade level.

They're certainly better than UNC... but then again, who isn't?

I agree with you, JR. But I wonder if the legal system will do anything significant. If Penn State didn't lose their accreditation for multiple violations of the Cleary Act, it most likely indicates that UNC probably won't lose their's for their decades of academic fraud. It's a sad comment on our society. More's the pity.

The more I think about it, the more I would actually prefer an organization ran by someone like Slive instead of someone like Emmert. At least a guy like Slive would be honest with people about what the rules of the game are and how it will all be organized.

...and yes, Slive would pass a few rules that would actually hurt my alma mater.

Yesterday Roy Williams said you can consider him naive but not a cheater. Once again he stated, that Walden (the assistant he brought with him from Arkansas) that he placed over the athletes academics is the most ethical person he knows.

I have reached the conclusion that Malden is the weak link and Roy Williams fears he will tell all unless Williams protects him.

During "Promote The ACC Day" John Swofford was being interviewed

After an obvious question about the additional penalties the ACC levied on Clemson in 1982 behind the leadership of Swofford when he was Athletics Director at North Carolina, the press conference was shut down and there wasn’t anything else to discuss. statefansnation

Throwing him under the bus like that ain't the way to keep him quiet. At least, that's how I see it.
