Yep. Overdue by about 7-8 years. But better late than never. It's a shame that the current students will have no idea who he is.

That's why I've always love The Mullet (in the same kind of way that I loved Howard Cosell)....not exactly Mary Sunshine, but knows a thing or two about hoops![Image: 3735649509_57ae14ff91_b.jpg]

The mullet may be a little salty sometimes. But yes he's probably forgotten more about basketball than I know.

RE: Goldsberry's night coming in Feb.
John was fun to watch. He showed his game in his freshman year when Timmy B. was suspended just before the NCAA tournament in 2003. We all thought that we had no chance after he was out because we were an 11 seed that year going against 6 seed UMd (Hawks were a 9 seed in 2006). That was a tremendous disadvantage because Timmy was playing lights out. Are you kidding me? He had like 6 steals in the CAA final with most of them dunks. Still, he stepped up and set an NCAA tourney record for consecutive 3's made without a miss and played terrific D. What a player! He's definitely deserving! He advanced the ball via the pass so well. He was an active defender that truly understood positioning, could shoot the eyes out of it and could create better than advertised via some serious funk mind you ( see the Delaware game that we all thought was lost!). He even understood the fine points of the game regarding swiping low to high (on ball D), angle post entry and, of course,weak-side help. His mind made him much faster than he actually was. Yes, John deserves this honor.

I remember going to an away Elon game and talked to Brad Brownell before the game and also Ernie Nestor, the Elon coach. I asked them what they felt going into the game. Brad told me, "Bill, don't worry, I feel good about this" (as his team was wizzing the ball from person to person-it was impressive to watch up close). Ernie told me something like....this is going to be very tough. The spread was only like 8 points btw, which I was surprised about. UNCW was up 22 to 4 before long but only won by like 13 (should have bet but I don't). That was a fun night. Got to watch the game with John's dad and mom plus Beckham's family (great Bball people that know the game well!). John's dad was awesome, he asked me(after I introduced myself as billthebighawkfan, after realizing that was JG's Dad)," Bill, why aren't they fronting the post" and I was like... yes, they should-no doubt that they read the CAAZone often (great hoops people)-it was as if they knew me already! And, right after that, they did front the post. They were all great people to watch the game with. I really loved that particular team-that was the purest basketball I've ever seen period. And, the team before was legendary (thanks Ed Williams for the steals and dunks!!). Fun times!

Old 70s had the chance to meet Goldsberry's dad once. He was/is a coach. It was halftime of a game I managed to catch. I asked him what he thought of what we had just seen on the court. Listening to him break down and analyze the first half action, I realized just how little I really knew compared to a real Xs and Os guy.
