I think Butch Jones should be considered for sure.
Good luck getting Butch away from Tennessee. He's setup shop here at UT, a historic SEC program, and the Vols can match any offer Michigan puts forth. There are plenty of deep pockets in Big Orange Country.

If you were a coach, would you rather rebuild at an old SEC power, where there are recruits galore, or would you rather try it in B1G country at Michigan, where good, fast recruits are few and far between? Any school that needs speed goes south for those players. Being in the south to start with makes that job considerably easier.

I don't know who their next hire should be. I just know I don't feel sorry for them. They hired a coach wanting change, fired him because he's was doing what they hired him to do (his way) ( which is why they hired him in the first place). Then they hired someone to take them back to where they had said they wanted to get away from.

Ty Willingham is fit and well rested. Michigan could do worse.

I know he's had a checkered past, but the one thing he can do is recruit. I don't know which job will open up in the Big Ten this off-season--Purdue? Hazell is only his second year but is the team really showing signs of life? Illinois? Tim Beckman better make a bowl this year...and even then, he might get pulled. Bo Pelini could get canned if this hot start turns into a meltdown...but there again, I don't think Ogreron is a "blue blood program" material.

Kansas ought to hire Orgeron. They'll probably make a "safer" choice, though, even though safer choices usually result in another string of 3-win seasons for programs like that.

I would like to see Coach O at the helm of another school. But you're right Allthat, he is not 'blue blood' material. Maybe K-State if Snyder actually decides he's mortal.

Systems are fine, but first rule in coaching is you have to work with what you've got. Adjustment periods are OK, but multiple seasons of complete ineptitude isn't. RichRod might have ended up OK, but through three seasons he missed a bowl twice (something Michigan hadn't done in a long time), had terrible defenses every year, had offenses that didn't seem to show up vs. the good teams, and finished his last year 2-6 with his final game being a blowout loss to a middle-tier SEC team. If all that was the cost of building his system, then his system needed too much to go right to be a good choice for Michigan.

I think Michigan can bounce back fairly quickly with the right coach now. The recruiting has been good. An adjustment period again, but after that, a good coach should be fine.

The SEC is by far the better conference, giving them a big edge up in recruiting. The weather is far nicer too. IMO it's a no brainer. I would far rather be in Tennessee than Michigan. I had the opportunity to live in Michigan. I turned it down to live in Tennessee. Butch will do the same, given the chance to make a similar decision.

RE: Let the speculation begin on new Michigan HC
Michigan--historically--is kind of a "Notre Dame lite" when it comes to recruiting. They do draw from Michigan, Ohio, and W. PA, but they have a bigger national draw than anyone else in the Big Ten. They just need a national name. RichRod had a nice reputation, but he was still a bit of a firecracker, whipper-snapper type of coach (someone mentioned Mike Leach...). RichRod couldn't bring in 5-star talent...and the Michigan fan base undermined him so much that he couldn't build up a better reputation outside the program or a rapport with the guys that stuck around inside the program.

Michigan--with the right head coach and staff--could become like Stanford is now (how odd is that to read!!!). Strong academic thrust, bring in guys from all over the country, play NFL-style football, be at the top of the Big Ten every year.

No disrespect to Tennessee, but they have never had the national draw of Michigan...and they are one of many big fish in the SEC--Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, LSU. Michigan--at worst--is in the top 4 of the Big Ten; many contend they are 1-2 with OSU. Michigan needs to go BIGGER than Butch Jones this year. Maybe in 2-3 years Jones will have UT clicking again, but right now, he would just be inviting another RichRod situation.

Michigan - and the B1G - have their best days behind them. It's all about the south these days. That's where the recruits are. It's where the best weather is. And it's where the best football is being played.

One question would be if Harbaugh and his family want to make the move to Ann Arbor. Harbaugh has worked in California as a Raiders assistant, head coach at the University of San Diego, head coach at Stanford, and head coach of the 49ers since 2002 and played his final two NFL seasons in 1999 and 2000 for the Chargers. Leaving California for the Midwest would be a big adjustment.

Harbaugh has an advantage in recruiting that he has succeeded at the NFL Level and can easily appeal to HS Elite Players on what it takes to get to the highest level of Football the National Football League... remember he has taken 3 different teams to Championship Sunday and the Super Bowl....07-coffee3

The offensive line is where RichRod hurt the program and quarterback. A true freshmen and a bunch of sophomores start.

Hoke should have stayed with the spread until he had a veteran line and a real quarterback.

I agree with you there. When Hoke took over, the team was built to run the spread option attack. Trying to turn the clock back to run the offense Michigan ran prior to that was an exercise in futility. It was doomed to failure.

The latest news about Harbaugh is how he scheduled a practice to coincide with the presentation ceremony of the new stadium. He went and showed up in what he wore to the practice as he made a cursory appearance but many players didn't get that chance.

The rumble in San Francisco isn't an earthquake but the growing disgruntlement with Harbaugh in San Fran is growing into quite a tremor.

Deion Sanders isn't backing down from his statements that many people in the San Francisco Front Office and players want Harbaugh gone dispite his success....Primetime on CBS:

"I have sources. I'm not going to name my sources. I have sources that wear football uniforms, coats, suits and ties. I didn't stutter, nor did I stammer. This is real," Sanders said. "You're talking about [49ers general manager] Trent Baalke, we know there's a rift between he and Harbaugh, we all know that. That's why the whole Cleveland thing came up last year. Who's ever heard of thinking about trading a coach. Why would Cleveland even inquire if there was nothing there? That has trickled down into the locker room. Not only are my sources correct, I checked three insiders from different networks and it's 100 percent. You can shoot the messenger, but the message is real."

Interesting. But not all that surprising, considering he's an alum of Michigan and doesn't get along with the 49er's management. Of course, if Harbaugh does take the Michigan job, there's no guarantee it will work out. NFL head coaches don't have a great track record as head coaches at the college level.
