This was pretty much agreed as the best of the plans by students I know. Although certain aspects of this will look strange. This announcement just caused me to make revisions to my senior thesis which I'm completing this week on Transportation in New Brunswick and Rutgers. It would appear my prediction of Bus Rapid Transit is the likely alternative for the future here much to my disappointment.

You could always revive the slidewalk idea used in some early Asimov stories. That would handle mass transit without the wait.

"Nobody walks in LA" has apparently become the unofficial national motto. Is it any wonder the world laughs at Americans for driving everywhere and only walking on treadmills in gyms? ;-)

I keep forgetting your major ~ my profession. This is in serious discussion around ATL as well. In fact the Georgia Planning Association gave an award this year to the plans for a special BRT corridor up I-75. Whether or not it expands depends on a) the potential for MARTA trains to punch into outlying Cobb and Gwinnet counties and b) the mode of transit used in the proposed Beltline.

Buses and trains have been used in conjunction in Europe by many mass transit companies. I remember when I served in the Army in Berlin I could get on a bus or a train, and ride anywhere. You could transfer from bus to train, and ride around the city all day long. There was no need for a car. Anywhere you wanted to go was easily accessible by mass transit. The auto industry killed that in the USA before it had a chance to get started. But we can still do it - if we put forth the expense and effort.
