RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting
According to Twitter Eddie Scott just received an offer from Rhode Island. Checked Jihar Williams's Verbal Commits page and he has recently received offers from Coppin State, Siena, and High Point. Connor Crabtree picked up his second offer: Kennesaw State.

O'Connell with an offer from Georgia Tech. Stanford coming to see him soon. Looks like a long shot for us, I suppose.

I'd say that all of our early offers tend to be long shots. However, just because a kid has high major offers doesn't mean the schools are a good fit or tell you how much of a recruiting priority the kid is.

Think working a plan similar to last year with talented, versatile wing recruits...

Tribe in to see O'Connell today, so, we're obviously persisting despite the high majors on board.
Scott added an offer from Dayton.
Baker with 17 D1 offers and named MVP at Spring Jam Fest.

We are definitely aiming higher than ever.

Based on the quality and quantity of offers, Jihar looks like our safety pick, though Shaver offered him early so maybe he thinks Jihar is going to take off.

Baker has gotten a lot of offers but if you go solely by kenpom end of year ranking WM is his best offer. Certainly a suspect metric to measure strength of program and program strength is not the only factor when making a decision of course.

We have to hope he and Brandon remain tight.

With Baker the only firm PG offer out there, have to believe that's a strong sign of how committed we are to him.

Not that it is telling one way or the other, I did see a tweet where we were not listed amongst the schools reportedly recruiting him (Geo) hardest.

Safe to say that Whyte knows how to attack the rim. Love how aggressive he is in those highlights.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting
Whyte was offered by Northeastern on Monday and received a f/u "congrats family" from Baker, who has NU offer, also. Unfortunately there was, also, a Pemberton tweet after receiving his Hofstra offer this week. l'd be curious if his VCU/Davidson offers from last year still stand. Had wondered if we had any contact, but thought his interest was possibly higher. Maybe we finally stepped in because of a viable connection between the two. Would be a great package, but I think Whyte is a high major signee.

MrJ, I initially thought the same, but had the sense that tweet about Baker's recruiting was just a passing statement to list some of the offers, since no new recent offers, as opposed to any direct observation. Least that's my theory and I'm blindly sticking too it.

Tribe were in to visit Scott yesterday.

Would love to see us wrap up a current offer, but would expect our final group will be totally different names.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting
All this endless speculation is fun as we continue to recruit high level prospects. With these kids, however,
there is little way to tell where and when they're going to commit..and, a la Pemberton, even sometimes when they commit there are no assurances until they finally sign on the dotted line.

The 2017 signees are critical to the program with Omar and Daniel leaving after next season. With our
consistent approach to going after high level prospects it appears certain we'll end up[ with a quality class of three.

But at this point it's impossible to say who they are.

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting
We are in a transition as a basketball program. If we continue to win 20 games a year consistently we ARE going to get more of the high end kids and we will then start having to ask why are we in the CAA. Same thing happened to VCU and Richmond. No reason we can't do the same. We are so far ahead of where we were ten years ago. We are a very attractive choice for a lot of kids looking for a high end liberal arts degree. The other thing we rarely discuss on this thread is just how many of our players have played professionally over seas. The money is good for a kid out of college who wants to explore the world a little bit.

Shaver is doing a fantastic job, and this program is in a better place than it has been in decades. But we are a long, long, long way from being where Richmond and VCU were when they left (in basketball budget alone, if nothing else).

Agreed. Shaver is doing a good job and has proven loyal, but the reality is we are only a couple of successful recruiting years away from our coaches being hired away. College basketball is big business and we are not equipped to combat big budget competition if they come calling. A true sign of our program arriving is being able to maintain success regardless of who is at the helm.

This is all a fascinating process and one with I'm not familiar, having joined the message board sometime around Pierce and Knight signing. How many players do you think Shaver will give offers to?

RE: 2017 Men's Basketball Recruiting
Why are we in the CAA? Cost containment.

Anyone seen the new Big Ten deal? We can not compete with that.

As for VCU, good for them, and we are not going to compete with them.

Richmond ... that's where it gets interesting. They are in a better basketball league, but they have taken their lumps, although not as bad as Mason.

I'm coming around to the point of view that I'd rather have winning seasons in the CAA rather than struggle in the A-10.
