When Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980,
While the GOP focuses on the next elections in a given cycle the democrats have focused on affecting a sea change in our culture that secures the loyalties of the resultant culture. The dems have it right while the GOP'rs are left behind. Communism ain't dead by any stretch of the imagination.

and yet....only about 3 in 10 that directly hit the work force after HS can read a measuring tape,do basic math,or communicate effectively... verbally or in written form. No...they are not better educated in things that are useful. This has been my observation over the last 30 years of interviewing and hiring these people. Their skill sets have gotten worse...not better over this time period.

Our education system is a total failure when it comes to educating young people to be productive workers.

RE: When Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980,
Once again with misleading comparisons.

First we talk about whites without college degrees. THEN we talk about ALL voters with degrees.

a) in 1979, 49% of high school graduates attended college... in 2009 it was 70%. I'm betting it's even higher now.
b) the largest expansion (by percentage) of those graduating college have been women and minorities. Males are up 36%... Females are up 56%. White students have fallen from 20% while Hispanic student enrollment has tripled and black students are up 50%. Source nces.ed.gov

Yes, democrats do pretty well with college educated women and minorities (identifying with the 'anti-white-male' rhetoric of the left)... however...

You are claiming a 'shifting allegiance' of the better educated when the clear indication is that it is the 'shifting demographics' of the better educated.

Given the massive advances for women and minorities and the actual FALL in the white male population going to college... it seems pretty clear that a decent argument can be made that Democrats actually do WORSE with women and minorities as they become better educated. Remember that before Reagan took office, Democrats controlled 60%+ of both houses AND the Presidency. It's not as if they weren't popular.

What I'm saying is, if the shift in college demographics is away from white males and towards females and minorities (as it is)... and the growth in 'popularity' of the Democratic party is less than the growth in the enrollment of females and minorities (as it is) then there is clearly SOME movement from left to right as people get better educated... which is entirely counter to your claim. It may be less than the movement from no degree to degree (I'm certain it is) but it is greater than zero.

I would absolutely love to be a fly on the wall in one of these strategy sessions for both parties. You just know there are people out there mining this sort of information. I absolutely love and am intrigued by this type of analysis.

Funny, b/c here's a Republican who said the exact same thing you've written here, and he had to resign

Do you think Fit realizes that education has been extensively dumbed down?

In fairness to him, probably not. He is the system that is peddling 'educations' that make kids dumber than they were before they walked through the doors.

Obama beat McCain 50-48 among those with bachelor’s degrees, and by a decisive 58-40 among the 17 percent of the 2008 electorate with post-graduate degrees.

The shifting allegiance of the better-educated – together with the growth of such pro-Democratic constituencies as single women, Hispanics and African-Americans — has been a crucial factor in the revival of the Democratic Party as a fully competitive force in presidential elections. The party’s gains have, in many respects, made up for losses among white working class voters.

Discuss.

It will be 8 years of college grads being vastly underemployed. Single women, AAs vote Dem. Obama really got the vote out so I would expect less vote participation from the left.
Most of Obama's voters are worse off now then we hook took office. There will be some apathy.

Good assessment, I agree 100%

It's pitiful.

Not really. He couldn't have succeeded in a system that wasn't dumbed down. But of course those who purvey the current system don't let the customers know that.

Most of today's teachers and other professions that require a degree would have passed in yesteryear's educational requirements.

RE: When Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980,
The value of a four year education couldn't be lower at this point. The sad thing is that many people feel they are indicative of some sort of intelligence when they are more about one's ability to preserver. However, for many kids today they would have been better off finding another field more suitable for them than believing they were special and that perseverance somehow would pay off.

Kids, perseverance, like effort, is only worthwhile when in pursuit of a positive. You have to preserver in a worthwhile direction. Most today are missing half that equation.

Our schools, especially the public K-12 system, just move kids along worthless lines and completely fail to develop children into the people they should become.

My fiancé teaches at the finest public school in the nation and my opinion of our public school system still couldn't be lower. The biggest blessing in my life is probably the fact that I did not get most of my K-12 education in the United States.
