Any updates on this front? It seems that a decision would need to be made pretty soon.

It's been quiet. I always figured women's bowling, Lacrosse, and Rugby would get added. There's also some ways around all that to where they wouldn't have to add any sports at all. I believe Chattanooga did something similar years and years ago.

I am willing to bet that we won't be adding any women's sports. I think all of that talk was BS, just like needing to move to Freedom Hall due to the roof repair, having to implement a student fee in order to sustain football, or that they are still evaluating the sites for the football stadium. Each of these things, in my opinion, were said for PR purposes only.

A student fee was absolutely needed to sustain football at a competitive level. We didn't have one before, and it turn were mediocre and not fully funded. And I know for a fact that there were studies done on where to put the football stadium. We know now where it's going to go, but can't make any announcements due to politics. Have to get that PAC funded first.

2) They absolutely could have done football without additional fees if they had cut funding to the minor sports.

3) The roof excuse for the Freedom Hall, as we now can openly see, was complete crap.

I know that when you are trying to build community support for an athletic program, it is all about trust. When you say in September 2013 that we will have a location for the field announced by October of that year, and they have not announced it a year later- that destroys trust. It would be better if they would just come out and say "Our first priority is the PAC since we are an academic institution, we will not build the stadium until this is built. But the location will be.....".

Likewise, it would have been better for them to say "listen, we hate the Minidome, and are going to relocate to Freedom Hall and abandon the idea of building a convocation center. We are sorry if you do not like Freedom Hall, this is the direction we are going." When you make up this story about not being able to play in the Dome due to roofing issue, you lose credibility. Again, just tell people the truth and quit trying to play PR games. At least don't get defensive when people call you out on it.

As for the women's sports, Dr. Sander had said that we should know which sports we would add by the start of 2014. Well, it is September and at this point I doubt it is possible to start a new women's sport to be ready by the time football starts. So, either they lied, or they found a way around the title IX issues (probably the case). But they need to tell people that.

You have to build a base of support for ETSU among a community that lacks this support. Be transparent and honest with the community. If the administration thinks that those concepts are crap, then this isn't going to work well for them.

I have no inside information, but I can almost guarantee the next women's sport we sponsor will be lacrosse. It's the only women's sport the SoCon holds a championship for that ETSU does not field, and they can play at Greene Stadium without a major inconvenience to the football program (the field at Summers-Taylor is too small, IIRC, or they would have done it sooner).

I'd also be curious to see if we sponsored a rifle team at some point in the future. It doesn't have the same visibility or ROI as other sports, but it's coed, allows 3.6 scholarships max, and it's not like there are no skilled shooters in the mountains...

Do any schools of our size offer gymnastics? Just seems like the Dome would be an ideal venue for it.

Well, remember, we *used* to offer gymnastics, and it was in the dome. Had it for a few/several years. Chris Ayers(??) was the coach.

Lacrosse would be interesting. It's definitely a lesser known sport around here though, so most of the players will not be local. Anyone have any clue where the nearest HS with women's lacrosse is?

And a rifle team makes loads of sense too, especially with the range under the dome not getting a ton of use. I bet most of the students on campus have no idea it's there.

East Tennessee State Rifle was a storied program with numerous high rankings and all Americans. Marsha Beasley '78 is one of the first who comes to mind. Beasley went on to coach at West Virginia University, leading that school to 8 ncaa national rifle titles. She is currently rifle coach at Ole Miss.

However, and this is weird......the link "ETSU champs in 1974" doesn't seem to show ETSU on that page anymore. Can't explain that. Maybe I'm missing it somehow, but I don't even see "Rifle", although I see "Pistol". Maybe those were moved over to some NRA site?? (I'm not gonna go looking.)

I knew many of the rifle team members over the years (but not Beasley). Some *very* interesting folks.

And no, we've never challenged Grand Valley St. for dodgeball supremacy. And I strongly doubt wakeboarding will be added as a sport anytime soon.

Relatively big in the schools in middle Tennessee, especially girls lacrosse.

There's actually a really good program down at Seymour, but most of the better players in the state are from the suburbs of Nashville and Memphis. Lax is so big in North Carolina and Virginia, though, we will have plenty of quality recruits to draw from in our traditional footprint, plus opportunities to get students from pretty much anywhere between San Diego and the Mississippi River, because the only program in that span is Denver.
