Not to toot our own horn, but Miami was tied for second (with William & Mary) for undergraduate teaching, ahead of Dartmouth, Brown, Stanford, and Yale.

RE: 2015 USNWR College Rankings (G5 Schools)
Well, it's not meaningless. It certainly has meaning, measuring exactly what they choose to measure. It just doesn't mean what what a lot of people think it should mean or wish that it meant.

It's like the top 25 in college sports. It exists because lots of people love rankings, love to see things put into a clear order. But like the college rankings above, it is very, very far from a definitive measure of what is actually "best," a concept that is a very nebulous and vague idea to try to determine.

Man, but do people love them some lists!

Except for the universities that falsify or rig what they report.

So even there, it's pretty close to meaningless.

There is a lot of objective data that is included. What it really means versus what people want it to mean is the biggest misunderstanding of a list like this. The self reported info and subjective descriptors are always taken with a lot more than a grain of salt.

People who choose a school because of its ranking are deluding themselves. It's almost as stupid as people who pick schools because of their sports teams that they have no actual connection to.

The best school you can get into is the one that is the best fit for your skills, interests, ambitions. And there are probably several that would fit the bill. Not going to find that in a magazine.

People do like rooting for a winner.

That's why all those UCLA basketball fans are happy every year.

I actually put a list together on this and posted it here (I think, unless it was sportsonly) some years back. Unfortunately, I didn't save it on my HD.

But, I would add to your comments that size and location matter.

If you're a recruiter from HR, are you going to make 10 phone calls to small colleges w/ 2000 enrollment, or 1 phone call to a university w/ 20000 enrollment? That's reality.

Location matters not only for your travel time as a student, but for the industry you hope to enter. Interested in pharmacy? Better to be near Philly than Mt. Pleasant, regardless of whether CMU has strong bio and chem.

Interested in the traditional publishing industry? Being near NYC is better than being at Dennison, no matter how high Dennison is rated (although you may have alumni connections from some schools like Kenyon and Oberlin.) And ironically, that industry was very big around my small liberal arts college alma mater back in the day. So pay attention 03-wink

Not bad for the U at Buff.

They are choosing to tout for the first time ever- cracking the Top 50 among the best public “national universities” in the country – ranking No. 48. That's up three spots from last year’s No. 51 ranking.
