RE: USF and realignment
The two leaders of the Big XII have what they want. The only two schools in the conference that are worth taking are Texas and Oklahoma. Presently they have no need for any additions. They make enough as a conference they don't need a CCG and have a back door to exit anytime they want to leave.

In future years if the two leaders decide to stay in the conference and add, it could be young surprise teams that have invested in their programs (like TCU did). maybe teams like (like Missouri St & NIU). If they have done anything it is the conference has proven that "they March to their own drum beat"

IMHO USF has squandered their opportunity (no on campus stadium investment) and a FCS attendance. Could be that USF's poor decisions will cost UCF their opportunity, because one of the Siamese twins is on life support.

BYU is the best of all the rest, so they could be a possible addition now or in future years. With the two surprise teams that gets us to 13 teams. Now who would be the last team in?

Sadly for USF, I fear your analysis is quite likely correct. 07-coffee3

The point of conference expansion now would be to generate more content for a conference network. The B12 does not have plans for one. At least not that I've heard. If you want in the B12 you are going to have to increase their media package value. A school would have to bring $42 million/year. BYU is the only one out there that has that ability. Uconn is close with basketball and Olympic sports.

Neither BYU nor UConn is worth anywhere near $42 million additional dollars to the Big 12. Nobody out there in the G5 is.

I don't know the exact value that BYU brings to the table, nor how to quantify that value. But they are unquestionably a big-time program. By any criteria -- budget, admin. + staff, support from both current students and alums, media-interest, fan-interest both in Utah and around the nation -- they are ready for prime-time. The religious/political angle is the only, repeat Only factor that's holding them back.

There are lots of religious schools out there. Was TCU held back? How about Notre Dame?

I'm not sure that's what is holding BYU back.

At those two schools, the religious slant is much less relevant (to the day-to-day activities of students/faculty/admin.) than it is at BYU.

In fact, I don't believe TCU is even governed or controlled by a religious organization at all.
