we make no effort to be informed on the issues, everyone expects to be bought off (with our own money), and our political class doesn't even try to be straight with us any longer -- we're lied to brazenly and constantly.

the only people for whom government still works is for the ruling class.

my hypothesis is that democracy may not work after all. the logical conclusion of self government in america may be detroit.

We still have a good structure, but it requires an immense amount of discipline to keep it going. That's especially true of times like this, when politics is as profitable as it is.

that is making it more accessible. Less chance of a consequence increases the chance someone will sell it.

There's one instance where you argue for the problem.

Ultimately, these "safety-nets" should be the states responsibility and not the federal government.

I don't disagree with that. If Republicans worded it that way, they would get more support.

Well I'm not a Republican. The issue here is that a lot of average Republicans, on the streets, assume people from poorer areas are lazy AF and don't look for a job; however, there aren't many jobs, other than service sector, for people with just a HS diploma. Lets get people trained for 21st Century jobs and do what we can to bring back a legit manufacturing base. And on the flip side, Democrats really need to stop hurting the job market with all these regulations. Hell, you're even starting to lose the Union base. I know of at least 3 powerful WPA, Eastern Ohio, and WVU unions that are refusing to vote for anyone associated with Obama.

Oh your not Republican? that explains why you are making sense.

I tend to agree. I do though have a major problem with some the programs you mention above being abused and setting up people for institutional poverty. I also have a problem with the SS system that I am forced to participate in and yet gives me a fcking HORRIBLE return on my investment. It is simply a ponzi scheme. We can do much better in this regard by allowing some measure of flexibility in SS investments.

But the vast majority don't abuse the system.

Well you might as well get the feeling that I believe in unicorns and jackalopes. You'd be just as wrong.

I lived in New Mexico for a while. Beautiful place, still love Santa Fe and have friends and family there, but New Mexico is one of the most dysfunctional states in the Union. On weekends, about 80% of the drivers are drunk.

Agree 100%. Whenever I see a car with NM plates I give them the road.

Had a childhood friend killed by a drunk last summer on 1 25 just west of Glorietta. The cops don't even pull people over for it. It's a lawless free for all on the roads. Pot is the last thing these people need.

The closer you get to Texas, especially around Santa Rosa, the more normal it becomes.

Yes. Republican establishment candidates of the 21st century are more like LBJ and other democrats. Reagan would not get the nomination in the 21st century, he was not an establishment candidate in 1980 but his style won voters over quickly. In the 21st century the Republican Establishment will spend millions to destroy anyone that doesn't fit the mold of the most electable candidate. Just look what that's gave us, McCain, and Romney.

Iceland, Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway have their defense funded and provided for by the US and UK. I am sure if we could afford to cut 90% of that out of our budget, we'd be rainbows and unicorns as well; however, with the US and UK going broke and Putin on the march, those rainbows and unicorns are endangered.

We can...there is zero need to spend almost 800 billion dollars to keep the monsters away.

Military budget is the first thing I would cut...no, slash.
