I guess it is never too late but I think that the best chance was after the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The attendance momentum was building and I thought that they were really going to finally put it over the top----they climbed to the top and got really close but they ran out of gas and just did not have enough momentum left for the necessary push on thru in the subsequent years----kind of like Armistead's Brigade at Gettysburg. If Stutz had had even a decent defense during the Gradkowski years who knows how far the program could have advanced?
Rockets were #21 Total Defense and #22 Scoring Defense in 2005-06 season.
Yes and it was the sole aberration during that period. The year before that the Rockets were #89 in Total Defense and # 86 in Scoring Defense.
However, rather than selectively choose stats to support a particular point of view, here are the TD and SD for 10 years so people can see them all and draw their own conclusions. Here is the format: Year (TD, SD ranks)
2000 (3,3); 2001 (24, 55); 2002 (58,64); 2003 (72,51), 2004 (89,86), 2005 (21,27); 2006 (57,95), 2007 (102, 116), 2008 (77, 97), 2009 (95, 116), 2010 (56,73)
Disclaimer: I didn't double check these stats and I looked them up in a hurry so if you want to check them for yourself, you may find a few mistakes to point out.
I have been screaming defense on the board for years. I particularly hate zone coverage-too easy to get picked apart. I hope the Rocket Defense is able to get some more Sacks and Ints against Mizzou.

I'm with you, unfortunately I think the answer to this is "success first". The old saying "build it and they will come" rings well here. Good won't cut it, we have to excel on a national level and cast ourselves into the spotlight. People don't see Toledo in the same class as those other schools, on or off the field. It's a perception problem that can only be fixed by proving these people wrong. In academics, they don't appreciate all the cutting edge research, ingenuity, and bright minds that come from our University. In athletics, most casual fans don't understand that Toledo is part of the FBS, the same level as these other schools. Never mind that we play the big boys and sometimes win, that still won't cut it. I hate to use this analogy yet again, but we have to be Boise-good before we start to pull local fans away from their beloved B$G 10 teams. A couple years of some serious success, and we could really build something special here in this city. No offense to NIU, but this isn't Dekalb with a ~40k population. If Toledo would have that kind of success, this could really manufacture quite a generation of new local fans that would go to the games, and then bring their kids to the games.
The time is NOW! This year, a chance has presented itself in front of a great group of young men. If we can field a team that beats Missouri and Cincy, wins a MACC and is bowl bound ranked in the top 25, this is what it is gonna take. We have a great city and we have to take what is ours!
Go Rockets!
You need to give the pre-game speech! I'm ready to go...where is my helmet.
LOL, thanks. Let's shock the college football world today!

+1.
We've had our big time wins over the years, we've just also had too many big time losses.

This sounds familiar. Was rooting for you guys. Was at your game last year at Mizzou and thought that was a good game. I thought you would take them this year. Good luck up until our game. Should be a good one.

And I am jealous you get quality non-conference games at home.
