well Double A I hate it when a poster has no response to one of his post so here is mine.
I replied to a similar post a month ago that I was planning on going to California for the game but my wife planned a trip to Europe at the same time. I was asked by someone on the board if I was complaining or bragging and I guess now that it was a little of both at the time. Unfortunately for me I had to have an emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor and I am still recovering so I don't get to do either the vacation or the game. Operation was very sucessful and recovery is going great. I will be watching the game on TV since I get PAC-12 station on comcast down here. GO TIGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, nope and they don't care. They've been playing there since 1982 and travel 26 miles to the Rose Bowl, on-campus rhetoric almost never comes up.

If our university was in the SEC or BXII like UCLA is in the PAC12, the OCS issue might also be a less of an issue. And with previous SEC consideration in the 60s-70s, the lack of OC facilities was a stated issue. Of course the Liberty Bowl doesn't doesn't have the prestige of the Rose Bowl either although fan viewing seems better in the Liberty Bowl. Also, UCLA isn't fighting for program recognition like the Memphis program. And since we are talking about the SEC or BXII as desired destinations for our university, I do not think there is a school in either conference without an OCS.

Technically, Williams-Brice Stadium here in Columbia, SC is off-campus. They've now included it when you look at the campus maps on their website. It's about as far as the Liberty Bowl is from the University of Memphis campus. In fact, they're both 2 miles away from campus. Williams-Brice, surprisingly renovated an area around it very similar to Tiger Lane (and it's also located on the SC Fairgrounds).

Distances may be similar but nothing else in comparison between our university's proximity to the Liberty Bowl & its environs in Memphis vs USC & Williams-Brice environs in Columbia SC. When I was there several years for a Clemson -USC game, I couldn't even tell when I left the USC campus & where the city began. Not that way in Memphis...

I guess I've lived here long enough and to me there's a pretty big contrast. Once I'm down on Assembly St here in Cola and cross the train tracks where the old Capital City Stadium is (soon to be used to be) it's a completely different environment from the campus. The street on the other side of Williams-Brice has been incorporated a little better to make it feel more on-campus, but not a whole lot IMO.
Even if I agreed with you, I think it would still serve as an example for UofM to try and stretch itself out to make it feel like the Fairgrounds are incorporated to the campus like you feel Williams-Brice and SC Fairgrounds are. Even the new baseball stadium for USC is technically off-campus. But I think the bigger environment that changes it moreso is the fact that USC is downtown, so it can hide it's actual campus in that environment whereas UofM can't.
I agree that the Liberty Bowl and UofM campus environment is not the same way USC is in Columbia, but it doesn't mean that it can't be made that way, and incorporated that way. Just a little imagination and investment, dontcha think?

City of Memphis has done nothing to enhance the environs of the Liberty Bowl, aka Memphis Memorial Stadium in 50 yrs. If anything there is less to attract visitors now to the Memphis fairgrounds area than in the whole period since the stadium was built. I have no faith in the city doing anything to promote university interests. So if we're talking about investment, I'd spend the money for an OC stadium just east of Highland, making Highland the major entrance to the campus. This would cause the city & private investors to enhance the Highland-Normal districts with hotels, restaurants, entertainment & shopping appealing to fans & students. This would coincide with & support the university's stated goals of more on-campus students, more on-campus & near-campus housing & result in more alumni, supporters & fans coming weekly to the campus, which leads directly to more alumni financial support.
