Is that like some latter-day "Slave State/Free State" thing?
Yes.

So it'd be Nevada, just without the gambling and the prostitution? :)

RE: SIX NEW STATES?
Texas is the only state that can divide. As part of joining the union in 1845, Texas was given the right to divide into as many as 5 states, if it chooses to do so.

There has never been a serious movement to pursue that.

As one unified state, or as two states?
Prefer two. But I'd take one.

Puerto Rico has the Spanish Virgin Island it controls right next to the American Virgin Islands. The Virgin Islands only have 106,000 so it makes sense just to have them as a county in Puerto Rico.

The six state breakup would be interesting politically. West California (LAX) and Silicon Valley (SFO) would be left-wing democrat strongholds. Central California would be strongly republican. South and North California would be swing states. I think South (with San Diego and Orange County) would tend more republican than the two elections shown would indicate, and North might tend a bit more democrat. Jefferson would probably be the first state to have a Libertarian governor, senator, congressman, or legislature--or all of the above.

I could live in Jefferson, probably none of the others.

RE: SIX NEW STATES?
I don't think the senate would want to dilute their power by adding another 10 senators.

I could care less what California does. At this point I honestly don't believe they are capable of fixing their problems.
