SIX NEW STATES?
Six States Proposal, 2016

Venture capitalist Tim Draper is collecting 1.3 million signatures for a 2016 ballot measure that calls for splitting California into six states. Even if voters approve, it would take an act of Congress to create the new states. But even if Congress doesn't act, the measure would allow counties to work together to create regional governments. The measure would change part of the California Constitution. The Sacramento Bee reports it would also allow counties to ignore state laws that are not funded. Draper says smaller states would be more responsive to their constituents. "California, this is your opportunity to get a better government or a government that's closer to you and more responsive," he said, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Proposed states
Six Californias would divide the state's 58 counties among six new states: Jefferson (based on the historic State of Jefferson proposal), North California, Silicon Valley, Central California, West California, and South California

Jefferson
The state of Jefferson would be created from the far north part of California, bordering Oregon, and would consist of fourteen counties: Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Plumas, Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama, and Trinity

North California
The state of North California would be south of Jefferson spanning from the Pacific Ocean to Nevada. North California would consist of thirteen counties: Amador, El Dorado, Marin, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba.

Silicon Valley
The state of Silicon Valley would span the coastline from San Francisco to Monterey. It would consist of eight counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey

Central California
The state of Central California would be between Silicon Valley and Nevada. It would consist of the fourteen counties north of Los Angeles and south of Sacramento: Alpine, Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne.

West California
The state of West California would be south of Silicon Valley and Central California, and west of the current San Bernardino County. It would consist of four counties: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles and Ventura.

South California
The state of South California would be made up of the southernmost part of the state. It would consist of five counties: Imperial, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego.

RE: SIX NEW STATES?
Will never happen. The breaking up of current states has too much political baggage associated with it. The only acceptable way to get more stars on the flag at this point is the conversion of territories like PR or DC into states.

Why is West California due south of Central California (and technically east of North California)?

Puerto Rico may become the 51st state in the very near future. I think they have enough votes to get it passed in PR, which hasn't been the case previously.

Of course, if we get too many more illegal aliens, we could ship them all back in time to vote for Mexico to become a state. That might be the best way to accomodate things and satisfy everyone on both sides of the border.

RE: SIX NEW STATES?
Not happening. At most California should be made two states but since both would be Democrat strongholds, and PR is a Democrat stronghold; none of them will be admitted as a state till they can find a new state that would add offsetting Republican Senators.

I've heard from the guys I work with that it was a big deal that the island voted to at least put the idea on the ballot. I think one idea was to have the Virgin Islands and PR come in together as one state.

As for the issues on the Southern border, I'd like to see where decriminalization of drugs results in first. I think without the financial leverage, the legitimate government should be able to reassert its authority. But I'm not opposed to what you suggest if things don't turn around.

Is that like some latter-day "Slave State/Free State" thing?

Pretty much have to get past both Houses and that's going to be near impossible.

Would Kalif. want 12 senators or would it be happy with just the 2 they currently have?

Central California would be the most depressing State in the Union. Low wages, no water, illegal immigrants, no English, and hotter than Hades.

Sounds a lot like Mississippi.

Not necessarily a water shortage, but illegal immigrants are everywhere. Especially around the larger population centers (Jackson, Memphis) and along the coast.

Yeah, man, I know how it works. That's why I made the comparison.

Won't happen but I would love to see California break up into three states. Jefferson, and North & South Cal. . The Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico would be another addition that should be made.

As one unified state, or as two states?

Prefer two. But I'd take one.

I was trying to write into my post a comment about how Mississippi would probably be a better place to live than Central California, but I felt that was a little too down on Mississippi.

Central California would be an awful, awful place to live. I have a close friend in Fresno who works for the University. Outside of some fantastic side trips up into the mountains, the whole area is hot, waterless, a bit dangerous, remote, and all in all a relatively unpleasant place to live with few redeeming qualities.

Like I said, except for the waterless part you could be describing the Mississippi delta. Flat as a pancake and hotter than hell in the summer. The only redeeming feature is the duck hunting in the winter.
