As bad as both looked on offense if Vandy and Wake played it might be a 0-0 game through 8 overtimes.

If Temple wins at Vanderbilt, that might hold up as the most laughable result this weekend. Temple is picked by Athlon to finish 10th of 11 in the AAC this season.

It would also cause some to believe that Franklin really was and is all that he is billed to be.

He leaves and Vandy goes down the tubes while Penn State quickly moves into the modern age of college football, both in recruiting and game planning.
PSU will be back.
It's time to put the Paterno era behind them.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how they perform in game one against a very talented UCF in Ireland tomorrow morning.
Football for breakfast. What a wonderful idea.

A rather pessimistic view.

Vandy looks like 1-11 this year unless they become 100x better than they were vs. Temple. Is Mason so bad as a head coach that they'll go 1-11 under him but would have gone 9-3 under Franklin or someone else? That's very, very unlikely. Much more likely is that Mason inherited a team that was going to be bad this year no matter who was coaching them.

Now now, do not attribute 9-3 to me. I am saying he very likely could have gotten them up for the game better. His departure alone can have an affect. Possibly learning a new offense and/or defense can have that affect, especially in the first game.

This is just one game, talking about Vanderbilt's final record already is a bit much. You may if you like, but don't attribute that drastic of a statement to my words.

I agree Franklin would have gotten them up and better prepared to play. But, Franklin took a significant part of last year's recruiting class with him, or lost them altogether when he changed positions. Vandy's cupboard is pretty bare.

Still by all accounts, and given the talent remaining on the team, this was a colossal and embarrassing fail even by Vanderbilt standards.
Put another way, the SEC team got their asses handed to them by an AAC team projected to finish near the bottom of the AAC. Repeat after me the "SEC is overrated."

ACC strength of schedule should kill FSU this year. ACC stinks.

Franklin's record at Vanderbilt is much less impressive when you take a look at who he actually beat in his time there. Vandy played one of the weakest OOC schedules of any major conference school which was good for four wins a year. The only major conference OOC teams he went up against were Wake Forest three times and UConn once, not exactly top of the pyramid teams. In SEC play, wins against Ole Miss and Kentucky don't count for much. He beat Auburn in the year Auburn went winless in conference. Two wins against Tennessee and a win against Missouri were in years in which they had losing records, and his win against Florida was during one of their worst seasons in memory. Last year's win against Georgia was really the one and only marquee win of his tenure.

Compared to Vanderbilt's historical performance, yeah, Franklin did well. But his record was largely due to weak competition and the good luck of going up against historical powers during their down years. He won't be able to get away with that at Penn State... he'll be expected to compete for conference titles and regularly beat the likes of Ohio State and Michigan or he won't last long. I'll be interested to see how he does.

My exact thoughts on the matter.

Your ability to talk trash to Top 25 teams evaporated after your first year playing in other timezones.

They were winless last year and lost bad most of the time. Any win is good. And ACU is FCS.

Hill looked very good.

I believe it was him who played the first half against Rice last year and looked very good. He wasn't in question. It was losing arguably the best offensive lineman and best receiver and Manziel's legs that were the issue, along with their defense. S. Carolina's defense didn't give Spurrier's often anemic Gamecock offenses a chance to truly test A&M's defense.

If that recruiting class was to be critical to THIS season, Vandy was in trouble. You really hope you aren't having many true freshmen needing to contribute

I'd like to extend my congratulations to Georgia State on their first win since 2012 and their first win at home since 2011 (when they beat a team currently in FBS - my school USA). Any win for Georgia State is to be celebrated.

They moved up too quickly and had a poor first coach (I think Georgia State recognized that when they got the call they had to take it, regardless of whether they were ready). They'll sort it out. It will take time though.

We'll wait until the end of the season to make that determination. To have you gloat over a victory over a new coach of the annual cellar dweller in the SEC just shows the degree of desperation in which you live. It didn't even involve your school!

Hill looked very good.

I will say it, Hill looks to me to definitely have the potential to be a better quarterback than Manziel. First game, breaking records.

Sumlin is proving what a gameday coach can do with all that Texas talent when he actually knows what to do with it. I am now extremely interested in what Strong can put together at Texas.

It is pretty scary seeing what is happening in the State of Texas with Texas A&M, Baylor and Tech at the levels they are at. If Strong lives up to his potential at Texas, there is going to be a whole lot of Texas pride going around.
